I priced it seperately before I booked, and theres very little difference. Just as a by the way, the camps are actually free admission, but without a guide it wouldnt be as interesting, they have stories that arent on boards. And dont think i'll just tag on at the back of one going through, they stop talking and say in a very loud voice, just let those people past and dont start till you go away :)

    Ginger,
Did the people you use/mention put a complete package together inc flights/hotel/everything etc?

They dont do flights, but if you email them, they reply back with the best prices they can find and with which carrier so you can book them yourself. The rest is organised by them.;)
  • Hi Ginger nuts.Did you buy your Zlotys before you went and if so where did you buy them?
Were you able to use your credit card there? Thanks
  • I got my zlotys before I travelled, I just used the halifax travel service as I bank with them, the difference was tiny no matter who I went with so just for handyness and speed, some banks wanted 7 days to get them, halifax had them next morning I used them. I had read that you get a better rate out there, but it was only .01 of a zloty when we got there by the time exchange and commission was taken into account so glad I didnt bother. Theres loads of holes in the wall so wouldnt be a problem withdrawing cash anywhere. But to be honest, Daughter and myself changed £150 before I went, brought my cards with me so I could withdraw money when I needed it. I paid for the transfers direct with the taxi driver, had two three course meals in a lovely italian restaurant with a couple of drinks, went into their equivelant of a spar and got crisps and chokky bars and soft drinks to bring to the camps and then some for the hotel room, snacked at a couple of stalls got some lovely strawberries, daughter bought some 'goth' items in a small shop for her friends and we still had money to spend at the airport, I tell no lies.I used my card to pay for entrance to castle which was actually a little disappointing, was just as nice to walk up to it and see the views which was free from the battlements. £30 of the original money was my daughters, so I managed the rest on £120 for three days visit, oh and a mc donalds on the last day before we went to the airport. I wasnt mean at any time, just watched what I spent my money on and if it could be done free I did it, some fantastic churches you can go round for free in the main city, stunning inside. Best bargain was two 1ltr bottles of carlsberg from the fridge, two 500ml bottles of diet coke, several chocolate bars (bit like lion bars etc) and two large bags of crisps for just under £2 in a small shop near the hotel;)
Now general shopping wasnt cheap, so if you are looking cigarettes, booze clothes etc, no real bargains to be had, but for the stuff I said above, very cheap indeed

Can anyone at least correct the dreadful spelling mistake in the title of this thread. It's embarrassing and sounds more like a town in East Anglia. Surely nobody pronounces it this way.

What spelling mistake? Auschwich is a legitimate spelling. I use the german-sounding word Auschwitz, but that was probably a Nazi term and the one prisoners would have been familiar with.
The Polish word for the town (Oswiecim) looks totally different to either spelling.

At this point it is SO tempting to refer you to my website about Poland but the last time I did that I got my wrists slapped by the mods.

I'd like to start off by expanding on "Misfire's" comments about the weather in Poland.

Winters are cold and severe but don't fall into the trap of most people and think Poland is like that all year round......it's not. Poland enjoys long, hot, continental summers-it is after all bordered with Germany. Geographically, you could argue the British Isles are closer to the North Pole than Poland is (I make this point as I may have to slap the next person who asks me if polar bears come from Poland).

I've just come back from a one week trip to Czestochowa and the temperatures were around the 30 degree mark so very hot ! Polish Springs and Autumns can also be hot.

If this is your first time to Poland then I would recommend Krakow. It's a wonderful introduction to the country and you will not be disappointed.

For the love of God don't even consider staying in Katowice. It's an industrial town and I'm surmising the only reason you mentioned it is because a number of low cost airlines fly to Katowice airport (and I would imagine 99.9% of tourists on these flights then take the shuttle bus to Krakow !!)

Gdansk is a fantastic place to visit and mostly overlooked by British tourists.
Another member described Gdansk as an "industrial port", I thought that to be a rather harsh description as the Old Town in Gdansk is beautiful.

Another thing about Gdansk is that it's located in the Tri City conglomerate-the other two cities being Gdynia and Sopot. All of the three cities border each other and are only a few mins drive away-train travel is also easy and cheap and Gdynia and Sopot are well worth visiting...........as is Hel Peninsula.

Please don't discount Warsaw. I was there again in June and it has loads to offer. It's not as navigable by foot as Krakow but public transport is cheap and there are some stunning places to see in the city.

We're looking to get over to Poland in April (when I have more Annual Leave due !!!) Flying from Belfast to Warsaw - hopefully...or else Dublin. My Partner is Polish so I have my very own guide :p We'll be going to his home town - Elk - which is North East Poland and very beautiful - lakes/forests and a very clean city. Things are shooting up in price though true enough eg. cigarettes are about £1.60 a packet - 6 months ago they were about 70p/80p fo 20. My brother in law is over there at the moment and s horrified at the rise in prices. A lot of Poland is very gorgeous and temps over there at moment last time I spoke to Brother in law it was 30 degrees !!! Sitting here shivering mid August in Ireland maks me wish I'd booked to go this summer:confused:
