No Internet after Windows Update

I am running XP Home on a laptop. I am with NTL broadband. Few days ago i was alerted that there was updates available. they were -

Security update for Windows XP (KB951748)

and

Windows Malicious Software Removal tool - July 2008 (KB890830)

They were duly downloaded and installed. I did not restart the laptop then. Last night when i switched on the laptop i could not get internet connection. I tried few times restarting the modem and laptop but no luck. i thought the server might be down. Tried again today but no luck. The a message came up saying that the Zonealarm has been switched off.

I tried my home PC which has not been updated yet with latest updates. The internet connection is working on the PC. So on the laptop i did a restore to an earlier date before the update and then started the laptop. I now have the internet connection working.

Did anyone have similar problems?

What happened to my laptop?

Lucky for me i have two computers at home so i can check what has happened.

Thanks in advance to those who replied
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

    Details here:

Essentially, turn external f/w settings in ZA down to medium, go to the ZA website and download new version 7.0.483. (Don't forget to turn f/w settings back to High!).

As you've done a System Restore, you will need to reinstall the troublesome Windows Update - you do need it for security reasons.

    It does work - I downloaded & installed v 7.0.483.0 from here:

So i take it the download KB951748 is very important?

Should mention i am running Zonealarm 6.5.737 A while back i asked the question if it is okay to upgrade the Zonealarm to 7.xxx version but was told no. Am i right in saying it is safe to upgrade?

If yes then i will upgrade the Zonealarm first then install updates?

I'm not techy enough to know the significance of 951748, just don't like having a PC without the latest security. Has been safe policy so far, only 1 minor trojan has ever got through.

I don't know of any reason not to upgrade to 7.xxx - a while back there was the issue that later versions of ZA don't support Windows ME, but that's not relevant here.

    Hi,
Latest ZA download solves the MS Update conflict.

    Hi,
Latest ZA download solves the MS Update conflict.

I'm not sure that's true yet - I tried only an hour or so ago via the built-in "check for updates" and received 7.0.470 as the "latest update" - which does not fix the problem.

Until they get their update server up to date, you need to go via the link that SilverScooby posted above.

As a matter of interest do i have to uninstall the old ZA before installing the latest version? In the past i used to just install the new over old.
