Cuba - Advice wanted

Hi all!

Thinking of going to Cuba in September and having never been before wondered if anyone had any advice on best place to go and things to do etc. Have been told its a really good "up and Coming" sort of place but thought i'd see if any of you guys can confirm this or otherwise!

Thanks

Newbie Nick

    Hi,

Spent my honeymoon there a year ago. Great beaches, food okay, Havana trip is a must.

Wouldn't recommend the Sandals resort there at all, not worth the money and we were VERY dissapointed. Apparently the Cuban government owns half of it with the Sandals chain, so the standard is not what you would expect from Sandals.

Cuba's a wonderfull country and well worth travelling around. I do however recommend not spending too much time in Varadero. Yes it's got nice beaches - but it's basically a Cuban version of Benidorm - you have been warned!!!!

https://www.carribbeanresortreviews.com is always a good starting point for reviews of hotels anywhere around Carribbean, seems to get a lot of people submitting reports

however as pointed out elsewhere, always take reviews with a pinch of salt and go with the consensus rather than those that go against the grain

    Leftynick,
Well we went there in May to the Resort Ibersta - Daiquiri for the stepson's wedding. Hotel and complex the best on Cayo Guillermo which was a bonus but we were on an island (Cayo) with little or no way off and had to rely on the trips out through the reps to get anywhere which can add considerably to the cost.
Weather was very windy which was a bonus 'cos the temperature was HOT :-[
The people (waiters/hotel workers are the most fantastic I have ever come across and they live for the tips although they will not shove this in your face. Some of these waiters were actually University graduates and some were infact Doctors and waitering was the only way they could make enough money (dollars) to have some form of living.
If you do go then take a case full of your old but good clothes to leave for them, anything for the kiddies i.e.pens, colouring books and leave your first aid kits with the medical staff on site. They are a poor but proud people with lots of smiles nothing I saw phased them. A 3rd world country with a 1st rate attitude to life.
We had a fantasic time except for the fact we were not mobile enough. Please ask more if you feel inclined. Have a nice one. 8)
What is this life if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare.
