Thanks a lot for all the help and replies (this is a great community!). I'll get her to try applying again online for the Nationwide account over the weekend and if that fails have a look at the other suggestions. HSBC would appear to make sense to me as they have branches over there.

Alternatively, I'm considering seeing if I could open the account with Nationwide myself if I can add her onto it with me as the lead name, but don't know if that's possible.

Anyway, thanks for all the help!

It should be possible to open a joint account with a flexcard each.

My son is a student but does not have a student account. He has his student loan paid into his flexaccount but ensures that he doesn't go overdrawn.

    Good luck.

  • I would normally recommend the Nationwide Visa credit and debit (Flexaccount) for use abroad as they consistently offer the best rates (even though they now have a loading outside Europe). We've been using both debit and credit credit cards for may years overseas and they must have saved us hundreds of £££'s!

However . . . I'm currently in Canada where the original poster is wanting to use their card and am having a nightmare.

I have a VISA debit card on my Flexaccount i.e. I can also use it for making purchases as well as use it in ATM's. I have tried Five different ATM's today and each have reported 'Invalid Transaction' and I was unable to withdraw any money.

Having phoned Nationwide (thank heavens for Skype!) they advised me that have been having ongoing problems (for over a year) with VISA debit cards in Canada as many Canadian ATM's can't read the Nationwide/VISA chip. Nationwide advised to keep trying as many different ATM's as possible. We'll see if I can get any money tomorrow!

My partner has a standard Nationwide debit card (i.e. not VISA) and this works fine without any problems.

    Hope that this helps.

    Nigel.

The Cumbria Building Society have a debit card with no overseas charges.

The only gotcha is that you have to have an address in their branch area to open an account - they don't do postal.
