Urgently need help with wireless connection please

I am having trouble with a wireless connection and need help asap please.
I have sky broadband and a dell laptop. My wireless connection has been working fine until yesterday. The modem is fine, lights on in right places (and am currently accesing internet through works laptop no probs so know its the laptop with the problem.) I am using the dell wireless card and all the light on the computer ok too, telling me the signal strength is excellent and that the connection is connected and ven telling me how long that it has been connected for. The problem is when I connect to the internet it is saying "Internet explorer cannot display this website." I have ran all the diagnostics and this still havent sorted it. I even ran anti virus and spyware etc.
At my whits end and ready to throw said laptop out of window.
I am nto meant to go on internet with works laptop, so need help asap. Partner needs internet as a necessity for his work, making this an essential.
Thankyou in advance of any help or suggestions.
Please bear in mind i am not a techie but have average knowledge of computers and networks.
Thanks

Well you have done all the right things, have you pulled the plug on everything and restarted yet? Had a couple of calls like this myself and in the end it all started to work, mostly by itself Grrrrr, Also reconnect all wires and cables, bad connection somwhere.
  • try looking here, it may be your problem too

I've had this problem recently - only I was trying to get my friends wii working online:)
Try this - (at your own risk)
On the machine that does work, in your browser, go to local host (127.0.0.1) or run your internet config utility. Then find the section that provides the 'keys' for security (WEP i believe).. there will be a long string there that is about 20 or so characters (from memory). Use this as your key when trying to connect instead of the key on the bottom of the hub.. hope this helps, otherwise the best bet is to visit the Sky support .. details on their broadband site.

I suspect that the problem is just the password for accessing the hum/modem is being encrypted..
  • Hi Painted Lady being my first post plse bear with me - I must agree - it sounds like the link cocoluvsmummy has just posted.

In short windows update KB951748 has caused this prob - I am presuming you use Zone Alarm or something similar.

If you need any help after reading the above thread please feel free to email me.

An easy option is just to turn the firwall part of zone alarm from high to medium. It has immediately stopped the problem i had of being able to access the internet but yes there are more permanent ways to sort it out,as cocoluvsmummy has linked.

Thanks everyone, seems that restore has sorted it. I have downloaded the patch so hopefully it wont happen again. I have also turned automatic updates off.
