I find that Irfanview works really well for me

  • I tried GIMP, both the original version and the latest (in fact its the photo editing software installed on the PC's at my uni....)

I use photoshop as well and they're very similar. Both are a world away from picasa and irfanview in that you need to know a bit about them to get the best out of them. They're built on similar lines and have things like layers, curves and support plug ins (I think gimp can handle PS plugins, but check the site for confirmation.)

The first time I used GIMP I downloaded a freebie guide called 'groking the gimp'. which can be found here gimp-savvy.com

The Gimp site itself https://www.gimp.org had a lot of info and links to other resources too.....

Download it, have a play if you get on with it great, if its too complex, take a look at irfanview or picasa (although I always think of picasa more as photo album software). If its just not your cup of tea, you may have to spring for something like Photoshop elements (a cut down version of PS), paintshop pro, or the big fella itself...

Thanks to all for the rapid replies. Much appreciated. I would need something like GIMP with detailed and advanced editing options and will probably give it a go. I also use Picassa 2 mainly as a photo album.

I would use Serif then as it does more than Gimp and has a friendlier interface
or for a more expert approach theres always Paint Shop Pro..

Anyone's help in getting the GIMP help files installed would be greatly appreciated. When opening the help file in the menu bar I get:

    help.exe Message

The GIMP files are not installed.
Could not open 'C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\help\en\gimp-help.xml' for reading: No such file or directory

Where can I get these files from and how do I install them?

Thanks to everyone in advance.

  • Hmmm, it is a bit horses for courses, but I've never got on with PSP, I think its one of those things that you can click with the photoshop or paintshop pro way of doing things (I clicked with PS, which GIMP seems to follow quite well....)

It's well worth getting the trial copies to see which one suits you....
