Does your son play world of warcraft by any chance?0
-
Are you suggesting he can rid the computer of the virus with some sort of magic spell??0
-
Yep, they were exactly my plans!! Clown! No, it would appear that this isn't a virus, but a false positive thrown up by Avast, and for some reason it seems more prevalent in people who play World of Warcraft.0

Hiya, No he doesn't. This post was following on from one i had earlier, He has this virus on his pc, and the few articles i can find on it say it seriously slow windows down, it has big time, i put his pc on at 7.30 this morning to defrag it, thinking that might help. I've just stopped it now after running all day and it's still only ad 69%. I think i'm going to have to reinstall windows, but its been that long since i've done it i've forgotton how! It's a shame as its got loads of school work etc on.0

instead od formatting the computer, just isntall windows on the same hard drive over the exsisting one.
That way you can open windows and all your files will still be located on C:\Documents and settings\USER.
Then you can back them up and then either stick with windows the way it is, or format your computer and install XP fresh.Rules, Rules, Rules .....0 -
try Malware Bytes to clean it before doing anything drastic like a format/re-install
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
- If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Hi, At the moment i can't even get on his pc, There was an error message concerning windows root\system32\ntoskrnl.exe being missing or corrupt, now its just half loading then restarting, I'll try again to restart it.
Thank you for your help x0 -
Hi Again,
i still can't get on his PC, if i just reinstall windows over the top of this one, will the virus not still be there? (sorry probably a stupid question!) what would you recommend as the best way? I'm not sure i remember how to format windows, plus set up a home network (i've not done that before either).
Thank you,
Michelle.0
