You and your children don't need ID to get on a ferry to the Republic of Ireland - just like you can drive across the border from Northern Ireland to the Republic without even being stopped (all that changes is the road signs and that it's MPH to KM/H)

Not true - this is from Irish Ferries website.

Irish Ferries recommend all passengers bring a passport with them. Irish and British citizens do not strictly require a passport to travel between the two countries - some form of identification is however required. Photo ID, Bank Cards or bills for house utilities addressed to you are all acceptable and useful means of identification.

We're sailing out from Pembroke tomorrow to Rosslare and spending 2 weeks travelling round Cork, the ring of Kerry and north Kerry. You DO need a car in Ireland as its quite difficult to see as much as you want without one - so either hire or drive. My mums from north Kerry and there is so much to see and do - beautiful beaches at Ballybunion, the spectacular sights of the ring of Kerry, boat trips to see Fungi the dolphin in Dingle, the lakes at Killarney. However, don't underestimate the distances - don't try to see everything in a week or even two.

Take a trip over to the Arran Isles too from Salthill... its traditional island!
  • Cork can be a good starting point for a city/countryside holiday. It's the second largest city in the country – meaning there's decent infastructure to and from it – and is also convenient to the whole south and southeast which is a lovely part of the country.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Just spotted this and would like to hijack (if you don't mind poodle!)

Can anyone recommend accomodation for 2 nights for a family around Kilkenny?

We`ve just had a holiday in Tramore, County Waterford and loved it.There`s lovely scenery, friendly people and plenty to do, even has its own funfair.
  • That sounds good. The kids love fairs.

  • if you're going to Kerry, then go and see Funghi the dolphin - he lives in the bay near Dingle. He is a solitary dolphin who has been there for over 20 years and is lovely to see a wild dolphin so close. There are also a group of islands called the Blasket Islands, which are beautiful - on a good day, you could be on a tropical island! On the northwest coast, Strandhill has excellent surfing and beaches. Make sure you check out the guiness (can't spell!) - it is much better over there!

I don't like Guinness very much! Too thick and gloopy for me. Perhaps I could develop a taste for it. Will definitely try and make time to visit the dolphin...how lovely :)
