Scottish Power

I took up an offer with Scot power one year ago, as the offer was £8 p/m cheaper than my existing supplier. Taking my usage and meter readings the monthly D/D was set and agreed at £55 p/m.

At the end of my 1st quarter I recieved a letter from them stating that the monthly D/D was to be increased to £75 p/m. I contacted their customer services immediatley who agreed to maintain the payments at £55.

This happened at the end of every quarter, and after numerous conversatiions with their customer service I decided to swap back to Brit gas.

My last quarter bill from Scot power came in at £232 gas, and £132 elec. This is £199 higher than expected.

Having contacted them again, I offered to settle the bill in full for £165, i.e. £55 for each of the last 3 months. They declined this offer and several calls later they passed my account to a debt collection company who are houding me for payment in full plus their costs..

I have offered the debt company the same offer of £165, but they are not interested.

Question is, are the demands from Scot power and now the debt collection company unlawfull and unreasonable, and if so what can I do, or are they permitted to do this and I've been stitched up...

How can the demands be unlawful? You are only being asked to pay for the power you have used. I too swapped to SP a couple of years ago and my DD's have gone up and down (mainly up I have to say) but I am a high user!!
  • I have not used any more or any less gas or electicity. The usage is unchanged.. They just put the prices up after the 1st 1/4 by £20 p/m. Had I known that this was to be the true monthly cost I would not have switched.

They in my opinion have been dishonest and misleading..

But how much would you have had to pay British Gas/any other power supplier for the same usage? Everyone's rates have increased so to keep your DD at £55 pcm and not go into debit, you would have to decrease your power consumption.

The amount of gas and electricity you use per month is never going to be exactly the same amount as your direct debit is for, it is supposed to even out over the year.

I don't get whey they have been dishonest and misleading, you have used that amount of gas and electricity and owe them the money for it.

If you weren't happy with their service and bills why wait so long to change again?

Energy prices have gone up a couple of times this year and are only set to increase. Even maintaining the same usage your bills will go up again.
