Help - Mondeo (99/V) Central Locking packed up

Can anyone give me a suggestion as to what to do next?

The Central locking on my Mondeo has stopped working and I suspect it is connected to the Alarm system as the small red warning light next to the clock is on permanently. The remote key no longer locks the car or unlocks the boot - the open button is broken on the key so I have been using the key in the old fashioned way in the lock!

While I have your attention, I also have a problem with the keys in that I only have a single key for the car and it is not the red key. When I went to Ford they quoted me over £100 for a new one!! Can anyone suggest a cheaper way to get another key?

The old man has a similar problem with his, it works with the key but not with the remote and Ford told him it's to do with the signal off his mobby that has interfered with the chip in the key. With regards to the key could you not just "lose" the keys and report it to the insurance company and check on your policy if they would charge to replace the locks.

OK a bit more news - I found this evening that both the back doors are locked and I cannot open them!!

I found that the central locking is blowing the fuse. I replaced the blown fuse this morning and hey presto all was working again. However by the time I arrived at work and went to lock the car it has obviously blown another fuse.

So any ideas where I can start looking to fix this?
Or is is it simply a case of having to book it in at the local Ford dealer and take the hit on their bill?
  • Find an auto electrician in your local business directory.

Also, log onto a Ford UK forum and ask there, it may be a common problem.

have a look at all door hinge areas you may have a trapped wire somewhere,or possibly a broken wire causing a short.

    A qucik update....

This morning coming into work, I could hear a constant clicking noise, sounds like a solenoid or relay clicking. the sound seemed to be coming from under the steering wheel? I am sure that this must be connected to the central locking packing up.

Any ideas what this could be?

For a very low cost fix my money would be on the hinge loop cables, pop the rubbers and have a look. If they are all intact then ask on www.fordmondeo.org or similar, if that doesn’t point you in the right direction take it to an auto electrician.

Or, stick a bigger fuse in and watch to see where the smoke comes from

    Stay away from the dealers

The bit about the bigger fuse was a joke

Nope, sorry I am not all clever when it comes to this stuff and to be honest wouldn't even know how to check the wiring.

I think I'm off to find my nearest auto electrician!

visually check the wires where they go through the grommit in the doors for any breaks or bare perts of wire.
