Flight change charges

I had to change a flight time last week due to our passports being stolen. I am still reeling from the 100% mark up the company I booked through charged me.
Is this legal?
We arrived 3 days late and had booked our hotel through them too so we had one nights accommodation instead of 4 and they said to change it would have cost me another £70. The hotel however disputed this and said a phone call would have changed the reservation and there would have been no charge.
I am confused as I agreed to no terms like this when I booked the flights.
Any advice

The charges the airline will have imposed will be legal, you don't say which airline but if it was a low cost airline they charge you and admin fee to change then the difference between the price you paid and the price available when you changed.
As for the hotel things are slightly different. Your contract was with the company you booked the hotel through not directly with the hotel. A lot of companies will charge amendment fees for changing hotel bookings whereas the hotel might not necessarily charge the company you booked with.
Which company did you book with?:j Debt free since 31/01/08:j

To change the booking with easy jet would have cost me £20 per person. Add to that the £15 per person change in the ticket price, I would have paid £35 per person. Dial a flight charged me £70 per person.0
