Oldndim

I'm now retired and have tried getting a credit card for shopping on the internet etc, but have been refused presumably because my income is not sufficient. I don't want to keep getting tuned down as this may go against my credit rating. How can I get round this? Are some banks more lenient? :confused

Have you tried Capital One? Worst case senario, they will probably offer you a secured Visa Card, (£49-£200 deposit with a credit limit of up to £2500)

Or if you intend to shop and pay off in FULL every month, try Vanquis, they will almost definitely give you a card, the only thing is, they charge very high ineterest (mine is 33.5%) but if you pay off in full every month, this will not be a problem.

Failing with this, have you thought about a pre-paid card? there is a prepaid Mastercard kicking around, but it works out quite expensive as you are charged to load your card with money and also an anual rate.

    Hope this helps

In this case the username of the OP is spot on - if I could I'd actually go further.

Well done on making it clear to others what the thread is about :wall:

You can use a debit card on the internet too - does your bank not give you one of these?

I had a visa electron debit card when I was about 15 and used it to buy goods online from all over the world.

Anywhere which accepts a Visa credit card will accept a Visa debit card.

Sorry but not EVERYONE that accepts Visa Card will accept Visa Electron, granted a LOT of people do, I can remember when I had an Electron, there were quite a few people that didn't accept Electron but accepted Visa.

Sorry, yeah a few places don't accept Visa Electron or Solo, but the OP is old and so will probably get a Delta/Maestro card anyway - Elecron/Solo are for kids and high credit risk customers.

And Visa Delta is accepted everywhere which accepts Visa (as far as I know).
