Painting radiator

Needs to paint the bathroom radiator. It is very rusty at the bottom, do I have to use a primer or can I just sand the rusty bits and paint over with radiator paint? Thanks

If it's VERY rusty you'd be far better off replacing it. They're not too dear and certainly cheaper than a plumber call-out and cleaning up the mess when it develops a pinhole leak while you're away on holiday... :(

Seriously it's not worth the hassle replace it.

Oh and yes you will need primer and it will take ages to put sufficient coats on and it will bubble and flake off in a depressingly quick time. :(

Though if you're just tarting up the place to flog it and have no scruples ;) then you'll be fine.

I've painted a few rads and I've used proper radiator paint (in a spray can by Hammerite) and also Dulux 1-Coat which says it's ok on metal. Of the two Dulux 1-Coat gave a much nicer glossier finish and it hasn't gone yellow yet (fingers crossed) after two years..
Trying hard to be a good moneysaver.
