Hi
Has anybody got any experience of these 'plug and go' systems.
I would just really like to know what the best make is?
Am looking at the 'Tom Tom' units at the moment.
Any thoughts?
Cheers

Hi,
I have TomTom on my PDA and it is excellent. Several of my colleagues have the stand alone version of TomTom (300s?), and swear by them too.
I have had the opportunity to try the new £199 Garmin which is also stand alone, and about the size of a cricket ball. The screen size wasn't a problem, but I found the navigation much more difficult to set up, but quite good when going. It also locked up twice out of six tries - but apparently, there is a new version of the software out that cures this.
There is a review of Sat Nav in the latest issue of PCPro (but I haven't read it yet).
For me - TomTom every time, and the stand alone systems are great.

Ive got the previous version of the TomTom go and its brilliant - really easy to use.
Ive looked at the others and the screens are too small or there are wires trailing allover the place.
The battery in the TOM Tom lasts about 6 hours before needing a recharge which can either be done at home off the mains adaptor or via the cigar lighter - both adaptors are supplied.
The software also includes the major routes of Europe and I used this in France this year and it was amazing - only the little single track roads were missed off- everything else was on there.
Buy with confidence - and no, I dont work for them !!!0 -
I have a Navman iCN 610. It's pretty intuitive to use and i never leave home without it nowadays. Speedcam databases are easy to load into it and it's generally reliable, however i have found a few instances where the address i'm trying to find appears missing from it's data base.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

Best place to look at is https://www.pocketgpsworld.com
Also check out the new Garmin i3 for only £199 it is a real steal. absolutely brilliant value for money and navteq maps more up to date the teleatlas maps of the TomTom. :beer:Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -
I have just purchased a Tom Tom One (£279 from Comet).
Absolubtly brilliant, I parked outside the shop, bought it, went to my car, unboxed it, plugged it in the cigar lighter and powered it up.
It starts by asking you a few simple questions such as what do you want to set as your home address, how do you like the time format eg, 12 or 24 hour and I think that was it. You just type it all in via the screen which has a simple touch screen keyboard.
It was so simple to use, all I did then was tap the screen then select NAVIGATE TO, then entered my postcode and that was it, It just guided me home, simple as that.
Since then I have read the instructions and discovered that it does so much more, it is brilliant. Also you can download a free Safety camera database from https://www.pocketgps.co.uk/uksafetycameras.php and copy to the Tom Tom via the USB cable.
Definatley recommend this item compared to others I have seen, it just works no hassle.Old pilots say "It is better to be down here Wishing you were up there, than up there wishing you were down here."0
