Adding a 1st floor to a church conversion

Hi. I wonder if anyone can give me some advice. (I'll try to keep this condensed)
We have bought a church building (built 1981 on previous church site). There is planning for a 3bed bungalow but we want to have an upstairs with bedroom and ensuite. Due to the design of the roof struts we would need to remove them or at least 2&3 out of 5. Ive been told that we need a structural engineer to advise us but the ones I contacted said I would need architects drawings first. Problem with that is that I could end up paying for drawings and an engineers report just to find its not possible or too expensive.
Any ideas?

thanks in advance
