Chance of getting a late payment fee refunded?

I am very annoyed this morning after getting a credit card bill from American Express with a late payment fee on it. I always pay my bill in full so I am not happy. The reason last month's bill was not paid is because I didn't receive a bill. As I haven't been using the card lately I assumed I hadn't gotten a bill because there was nothing to pay (it turned out I used the card once - grrrr). Does anyone know whether I have a hope in hell of getting the money back? I can't see that they are going to believe me when I say I didn't receive the bill...

  • Hi

Last month I was charged £25 by A & L for going over my limit. The only reason I slightly went over was due to Asda payments not coming off by card for a whole month.

Anyway, I called them to ask for the £25 to be refunded & they politely said 'no'. So I politely got on the works computer to bash out a letter. Basically it was saying Im such a good customer, never go over limit, on dd so dont incur charge, and the killer line - I would take my business elsewhere if they refused to re-imburse.

Success - a few days later, I received nice letter saying theyd credited it to my account. I felt like sending a letter of thanks.

Worked for me - give it a go.

Thousands of letters go missing in the post every day so not receiving the bill is a good excuse, I have used it may times and all late payment fees have been refunded. Usually a telephone call is enough but if they refuse a letter will do it. Someone should start a post with the best excuses for getting late payment fees refunded.
  • A Direct Debit for at least the minimum payment from day one solves this particular type of problem.

  • Natwest wont remove a late payment from credit file.

I disagree, there are a lot of options that people can check balances and payments dates with. You can check your bill online or get a payment date and amount on the telephone.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I asked nicely and they refunded me the £25!

....and therefore should accept that if they get charged, it is due to their negligence to check if they had a payment due.

I can see the point of Hermia. I hear a lot of excuses for late payment of CCs, and non-receipt of statement is a classic. In this case, it's a decent one, since there was only one transaction on it. It's the people who use their card for hundreds or thousands in purchases every month and then phone up bleating who wind me up.

Generally though, it's the account holder's responsibility to check. Your statement comes the same time every month, so if you don;t receive it, chase it up with your bank.
