My daughter's computer is showing the following message: 1720-SMART Drive detects imminent failure. Your hard disk drive is detecting an imminent failure. To ensure no data loss, backup contents and replace this hard disk. Attribute Failed: # 01. I've tried F1: Boot and tried starting it in Safe Mode, Start Windows Normally, Last Know configuration but is just switches itself off and comes back with the same message above. This has been happening for the last few days. Can anyone please help? She has all her GCSE coursework on there. Thank you.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000184.htm - gives some info on the fault.
It maybe a better option to remove the drive and set jumpers as slave and then place into another computer to remove the data stored. This way the drive is not being placed under any stress (no operating system needed to boot in) and there possibility to access the data will be improved.
It looks like you haven't a smowball in hells chance of getting the opereating system to boot. There are companies out there that specialise in data recovery which may help but it would be an expensive optionWelcome, rogerramjet.

Yeah, exactly. You need a new hard disk basically, dont use the one in there just now again.
Unplug it completely and if you can like rodgerramjet said tak it to a friends and plug it in as a second hard disk. Hopefully you can get the info off it.
If you cant do this get yourself a new hard disk, leave your old one unplugged and reinstall onto the new on. you should be able to do the same and drag the files over with it as a second hard disk.
Freezing it inthe freezer sometimes helps get more files off:p
Good luck and I bet you'll keep backups now! noone does till something like this happens

I had the very same problem in january, whem my laptop came up with the same message. The hard drive had been rattling and clicking a bit for the previous two or three weeks.
Anyway as it was still under extended warrantee (coming to an end in March!! - and the only ext. w. I have ever taken on!) I had it repaired and a new hard drive was put in. I am not techie enough to do it myself.
Laptop now works a treat.
Don't know how much it costs if you have to pay for it, though.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Hi thanks for the help/info. What do you think caused it?0

Probably wear and tear on the reader heads, or the Drive coating wearing thin, or the Spindle getting stuck or the intergrated controller board dying.0
