BT Total - idiot's questions please

I have just installed BT Total Broadband, which gives me 1GB usage per month. I have no idea how much this is or how I keep track of how much I have used. Any idiots guidance available please?
However my main question is am I using up allocated time if I leave my computer idle but connected to the internet, while doing other things? I imagine the 1GB is a unit of activity rather than time, in which case it won't be using any allocation while idle, but just wanted to make sure.
Also, when I log out and switch off the computer at night, should I switch off the hub at the mains or is it okay to leave it connected, as it seems to take a while to boot up when I re-start it the next day?
Thanks for any assistance.

Even when idle it will be likely to use up small amounts i.e. anti virus/windows updates checking at their home server for updates. if you disable those it should use next to nothing if you aren't do anything online unless you get something installed you weren't aware of0 -

I think that you have dropped one babe!
BT Total Broadband Option 1 (cheapest) gives a 10GB monthly usage allowance! see here
