Me and my family went to Tenerife and flew with xl airways when leaving the hotel to return home we got to tenerife south airport and was told the flight was delayed by at least 24 hours as there was a problem at newcastle with the plane....so we were put in a nearby hotel and was told that the food and drinks were free and that someone would be at the hotel in the morning 11 am to explain what would be happening. firstly we got to the hotel and the only drinks free was water so we had to buy coke beer etc (kids being kids didnt want water!!) yes we kept reciepts,
secondly we got up the next morning and no flight rep was there instead we got info in form of a fax!!!! and notices were put around the hotel reception we did get food...
we were told we would be picked up at 8.20pm which we were and when we got the airport the flight was delayed several times and we finally boarded at 12.30 in the morning we got on the flight and by this time everyone was starving when we boarded we were informed that there was hardly anything to eat as they dropped of the newcastle passengers and we boarded straight after them.. i was not happy at all so when we got home i emailed xl airways and they said basically they were not paying compensation and that i should claim on my insurance policy
i dont know what to do now or what to say can anyone help me or even if i have a valid claim!! thanks guys x

Sorry - don't think you have a valid claim - for delays per se there is no compensation. You are entitled to be looked after during the delay (and it sounds as though you were, even if chaotically and not all that well) but compensation is only payable if the delay is due to overbooking or cancellation of a flight.0 -
Depending on how many bottles of water & how many meals you were given. You could argue that the airline was in breach of the Denied Boarding Regulation by failing to provide you with meals and refreshments free of charge. The airline will probably ask you to produce receipts to prove what you paid and you’ll have to show the sums were reasonable." I would not change you for the world, but I would change the world for you"

little bit harsh i think, as it is a completely different situation, o/p was stuck in a foreign country, if i was booked on a flight with a company in a foreign land, and the flight was delayed by over 24 hours the least i would expect is the company to put us up and feed us adequetly, especially if there are kids involvedTake every day as it comes!!0 -
Quoting the Eu regulations, you were entitled to the following:1. Where reference is made to this Article, passengers shall be offered free of charge:
(a) meals and refreshments in a reasonable relation to the waiting time;
(b) hotel accommodation in cases:
— where a stay of one or more nights becomes necessary,
or
— where a stay additional to that intended by the passenger becomes necessary;
(c) transport between the airport and place of accommodation (hotel or other).
2. In addition, passengers shall be offered free of charge two telephone calls, telex or fax messages, or e-mails
Pretty weak really, all depends on the interpretation of "refreshments in reasonable relation to the waiting time". I.e. is water a reasonabe refreshment, were the meals reasonable etc...
To be honest they did put you up and get you home; not sure if you'll get anything from them. Check your travel insurance as you can usually claim some cash for delays such as these.0 -
I know this isn't quite the same, but I recently checked in in Glasgow for a Flybe flight, and on check in was told that the flight was delayed by two hours. We were immediately given £5 vouchers to be exchanged for food or drink. This was given automatically with a smile and an apology. Just glad we weren't delayed by 24 hours.0

Going back a while but we had a 72.5hr delay !! They gave us food at the airport a taxi to a hotel, free food & drinks and 4 free calls home. I had 2 small children at the time and the rep was very helpfull and made sure my daughter were very well taken care of." I would not change you for the world, but I would change the world for you"

We had a 22 hour delay with XL Airways on our return from Egypt earlier in the year. Same situation as yourself, put in a hotel etc. We were told the same and claimed on our insurance and got £25 each. Had 4 hour delay with them the year before, consequently won't be flying with them again0
