Why so expensive for adult plus one child?

Hi,
I have been looking for a holiday for a friend of mine, who is looking to go away with his 8 year old son next month.
Using the search engines, if I enter 1 adult plus one child, the cheapest quite comes out at around £800... but in the same search engine, if I enter 2 adults, it only costs around £500...!!
Does anyone have any idea why it costs more to go away with a child rather than another adult? Is there any way to get around this??
He is looking to go to somewhere warm with a beach, and has to go and return between the 16th and 30th August (for either 7/10/14 days!!)
This system seems very unfair to single parents as it stands...!
Thanks in advance

One adult travelling, regardless of the number of kids, will often be charged a single room supplement.
It could well be cheaper to class the party as two adultsIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
Thanks Reggie, I guess that makes sense...
Is classing as 2 adults allowed? (wouldn't want him to get turned away at the airport/hotel for not being the right age...):money: I heart Martin! :money:0
