Travel insurance questions

Hi

I have a flight which is all booked and paid for. With travel insurance, generally speaking, is the flight cost covered under insurance (e.g.: if you get sick) if the insurance was purchased AFTER the flight? I realise it may depend policy to policy but as a general rule of thumb?

I'm about to have a look at Martin's guide on travel insurance. Anyone have any experiences with the cheaper annual policies he recommends?

As a general rule, you are covered if you are unable to travel but, and this is a big but, if you are buying insurance now because you already know or expect to have to cancel, they won't pay out at all, so you are wasting your money. The reason to buy cover at the time of buying the flight is protect you in case something like an illness hits you, or indeed a car hits you, but buying late, you must be aware of the need to disclose any 'pre existing illnesses' otherwise the policy is void
