Hi going to start using my nokia 6230 as a mp3 player. Bought a 1 gb mmc card.
I've got a good spec laptop with bluetooth and wondered if I could get away with using bluch tooth from laptop to my nokia 6230 putting big mp3 files on the card. Or do I need to get a proper data cable from laptop to phone?

6230 should have come with a cable. Whatever you use cable or bluetooth you will still need to load on nokia data suite or the bluetooth software.
Your best bet and fastest way to get the mp3's on the mmc is use a card reader..cheap enough to buy got to https://www.ebuyer.com and search card readersWelcome, rogerramjet.

I've been told that one could use datacable or bluetooth to send mp3 etc over. I bought a gb mmc card so I would have to take the card out of the phone all the time. What I'm looking for is the fastest method, i.e bluetooth or datacable?0

datacable I'd say...I've used both.
The probelm with using the data cable or bluetooth is you really need to use Nokia PC Suite (data suite was a long time ago) or the third party software which comes with the bluetooth dongle, Both these methods would be a slower option than removing the mmc and putting into a card reader transferring the files and then replacing into the phone.
Personally I'd remove the mmc, but if you really don't want to do that use the data cable option
One other point, the data cable for the 6230 is a dku2 which will fit a number of phones, however, it is limited and the newer phones use a dku5 cable. If you intend changing phones or using different makes and you don't have a data cable at the moment go for a bluetooth dongle as you will be able to use that with any bluetooth phoneWelcome, rogerramjet.
