OH has a laptop with Vista installed (eurgh), and can't seem to play DVDs on it. When he tries it on WMP, he gets an error message saying there isn't a decoder installed, and he's downloaded some other DVD programs, but can't get any of them to work. Anyone help?

He's tried AVS and says it doesn't work. I'll try VLC."Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, But beautiful old people are works of art."

if not try this codec packDownload K-Lite Codec Pack
The K-Lite Codec Pack has a couple of major advantages compared to other codec packs:
- It it always up-to-date with the latest versions of the codecs.
- It is very user-friendly and the installation is fully customizable, meaning that you can install only those components that you really want.
- It has been very well tested, so that the package doesn't contain any conflicting codecs.
- It is a very complete package, containing everything you need to play your movies
The K-Lite Codec Pack works only on Windows 2000/XP/2003/VistaEx forum ambassador

Second VLC. Had a legit dvd that came up with copyright problems in WMP but worked no problem in VLC.0

Those other programs already suggested will do the job fine, but if installed at their default values will open in differrent players, ie: VLC player or Media Player Classic.
If you just want to use Windows Media Player for everything I'd personally recommend Vista Codec Pack for Windows Media Player. Details here , it will play every kind of audio and video format ( haven't encountered one it can't play yet ) but there's a separate download link on the same page for viewing Quicktime videos: Quicktime Lite for VCP, both links take you to the Majorgeeks download website.0
