Laptop not charging

Hi, I wonder if someone can help me.

My son has an HP Pavilion DV6000 laptop. Normally when he plugs the charger in, there is a blue light comes on by the socket on the side of the laptop and it starts to charge up the battery. This has now stopped, and nothing happens when you plug it in to be charged. The battery is now completely flat. I have tried plugging it into a different plug socket, changing the fuse on the plug, but no luck. (The charger is made up of two parts) My son is distraught!

Does this mean the charger is faulty or the battery? Is there anyway I can tell? I dont want to shell out for the wrong part!

It means either the charger is faulty or worse the DC jack on the laptop that you plug it into is broken. Most laptops will work without a battery in at all.

As Tom says, plus you can usually tell if the charger has failed because most modern chargers get slightly warm even when not connected to the laptop. If it's stone cold, suspect the charger and get someone with a voltmeter to test the output.

I hope for your son's sake it's the charger and not a socket failure - the former can be replaced quite cheaply from Ebay, the latter is a pain...

Also look for damage in the socket on the laptop and the connector on the charger. Also some chargers have a green light or similar to show they have power although that is no guarantee it works.

Call HP Service on (consumer) 0845 270 4142

PS If someone can open the PSU and with a meter check the internal fuse, please use a qualified person and unplug from the mains first.
