a minefield!

in Energy
I watched the Tonight programme, I am usually very adept at 'money saving' and am always doing my best to get the cheapest/best value whatever etc etc, but for some reason I have just left my gas and electricity with the companies that supplied my house when it was built in 2005.
Just dug my bills out - electricity with npower, on what I presume is their standard rate, 13.200p for the first 182 kwh, then 10.980p for remaining units. I currently pay £37 per month direct debit.
gas with EDF energy, Single Fuel IGT Tariff DD, first 1461 kwh at 5.649p, remaining units at 2.387p. I currently pay £42 per month direct debit.
I have had a quick surf around comparison sites, but it is a total minefield, especially as they all charge different amounts for the first certain amount of units, then another price for the remainder... it's almost impossible to compare (well for me anyway)!
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hi
From the information you've provided, my advice would be to stay where you are. You seem to be paying a fairly standard price for your energy and if it is covering your usage you are well set. If you value the peace of mind from having a fixed price tariff you could switch to one offered by npower and edf respectively. With the price rises allgedly in the pipeline it would give you security (if thats not an issue i wouldnt bother as the savings wont be huge)
I would avoid the temptation to switch one of the services so you get both by the same company. Although they will offer attractive sounding deals and discounts to get you on supply with them for gas and electric, these very rarely amount to much of a saving in real terms. All you do is open the door to one of the dozens of administrative errors that can occur during transfers and result in needless problems.
As long as what you're paying is covering consumption i would stick with it. With the energy market the way it is, you're unlikely to find a much cheaper deal
Hope this helps0
