new car key

Options
I have just bought a Peugeot 206 L (1999) which seems great so far except for one thing. It only came with one key, and the garage where I bought it from only had the one key. I have just contacted the local Peugeot dealer (the local key cutting shop said it was a "chip" key, so they couldnt cut me a copy) who said that as I have no "Chip card" they cant help, and the only solution is for me to have all the locks changed at a cost of £400.

Is there really nothing else that I can do?

Very grateful for any advice or guidance.

We have the same problem! Got a Galaxy (P reg) and it would cost £485 per new key - labour, resetting the entire system, matching the key to the car - and all that rubbish. (from the Ford garage)

We have managed on one key since we got the car and are very careful not to lose sight of it!

There is NO WAY I am paying for a key, the price of a short family holiday!

We've only got one key - god knows where I lost the other but naturally it was me  . I think we were told to just take log book (or whatever it's called now) in to a dealer and they can order a new key from there at a cost of £65 and that's for a BMW.
  • tried the log book at the dealers today - he said it HAS to be this "chip card" Bit daft if you ask me.

Seems like I will be managing with one key..........

    Hi Jo,

Slight diversion, sorry - I wondered if you managed to get any no claims on your car insurance (from your previous post).
  • no, but I got a very competative quote from Direct Line, so am well chuffed. (£364 fully comp, compared with £1135 from Morethan and over £600 from Churchill)

One of our Skoda keys was faulty when we bought my car. We went to the garage with the working key and from that and the car, they programmed a new key in about five minutes. I will ask my OH exactly what they did but I know we gave him the working key and he fiddled in the car and had a box like a mini computer. He got a blank key and hey presto there was another key to my car.

We didn't have to pay for it so I don't know what he would have charged if we had just wanted a spare.
  • My new clio has a chip in it, had a new one cut at a cost of £25, they take your key and run the code into a machine then from that they write it onto a blank key. Try phoning any other locksmiths and tell them that it has a chip, but quite a lot do have this machine now.

Article from the AA here explains a little about car keys and locking.

If your key is a fixed code transponder key (i.e. it has a microchip embedded in the body of the key, with a fixed code in it that is recognized when you insert the key and try to start the engine), then most larger key cutting shops/locksmiths will have the machine required to copy the code, and reprogram a new key. The smaller key cutting shops don't have the machine, as it costs around £700. Expect to pay around £25-£30 for the key.

It is certainly worth trying hard to get a key copied, as if you lose the only key you have, the locksmith will have no key to copy, and the costs can go up into the hundreds!

You could also try and contact an auto locksmith (see directory here, and ask their advice.

I found this website which has a paragraph on Peugeot keys
People are more important than things
  • thank you everyone for your replies - and especially cc25 for hunting around on the web for me. Will get onto some lock smiths tomorrow and see what they say. just had a look on the directory, and there is a specialist auto lock smith in the local town, so will get onto him in the morning.

  • thought I would post a bit of an update........

called into a specialist locksmiths this morning who was lovely and who really knew his stuff. He burst out laughing about the "Peugeot dont keep codes for cars older than 4 years so you will have to have your locks changed" bit from the Peugeot Dealer. He has advised me to wait until I get my log book back from the DVLA, then contact Peugeot Uk directly to ask for my code. THEN they will cut me a new key.

    Phew!
