See if you can persuade him it's a 'we' thing ie 'we' are doing this because ...., rather than 'I' am doing this because.....
Tell him it's a question of priorities - you can have that dvd/cd/holiday etc but we need to save the money from the food budget first - ie you can have one or the other.

You need to get his buy-in for what you're doing. No one really likes change. So you need to give him some good reasons to change.

What would persuade him. Could you look at him critically, pat his tummy and say 'someone could do with losing a few lbs' for example? Works for vain men. And then you can call your MS 'healthy eating' :rotfl:

Or could you start talking about your carbon footprint, the need to eat less meat to save the planet etc. then you can call your MS ethical living.

The final option is the MS angle and is, as dancingfairy says, to point out that he can have that widescreen tv he's always dreamed of by saving money on this.

I have used all 3 tactics at different times. TBH I find that not talking about the MS too much is also helpful, DH feels overwhelmed and impoverished. So I tend to use the health/green routes with him. Both of which I believe in too so it's not lying, it's just choosing which truth to tell :)

Bear in mind too though that it may very well be a gradual transformation for him. Personally I wouldn't mention the packed lunches for at least another six months, I'd want the early stage 'training' over with before I progressed...

    Good luck.

**edit** I should also say that you will have to learn to pat your own back on the MS front, or come onto the boards and we'll do it. Don't expect to get it from you DH :) or you'll be disappointed...

Those are very good points thank you.

I feel better just knowing that i'm going to try and cut back. But if I fall flat on my face I hope you lot will be here with more advice and tips.

the packed lunch issue I think your right i'll leave it for now....... I need to get used to my breadmaker too before landing that one on him.

I think i'm going to talk to him about his waist line :D

What the husband doesn't see...the wife gets away with.

I am fast learning from the old style board. I made my hubbie and daugther a bolognese last night. I used passata, onions, mushrooms, garlic and some herbs and bits and pieces from my store cupboard rather than using a dolmio style sauce. I'm told doing it this way is not only cheaper but healthier. He really enjoyed it and asked what sauce it was as he hadn't seen a jar in the cupboard. I said "oh just a dolmio - it was right at the back"

There's a thread on here called sneaky ways to save the pennies - it's well worth a look when your husband/children won't change their minds.

I do agree in making deals also - say if we buy this much, we'll save this much and then we can get XXXX. Then multiply it for over a year and show himn it written down on paper - I bet a lot of people if they really thought about it would have enough for a cheap getaway.

Glad you started this off - waiting to see what other ideas we can get.

Hi winnie and welcome to the boards.

i agree the takeaway tubs are good for freezing food in - you can buy a pack of 10 with lids in poundland and they are pretty hardy and my bf has microwaved them before with no ill effects.

My boyfriend doesnt really get much choice in what he eats/ uses etc. Its a case of Im the one payign for the food shopping so he either likes it or lumps it. If whatever he wants to eat isnt there then its his problem and he can go and buy it himself. I do make a point though to ask if there is anythign he wants or needs from Mr T the mornign before I do the shop - he has asked for sterilising tablets ( he is a keen mountainbiker and uses these to clean out his camelback), and a tub of 'Fab' Icecream - bless him - he doesnt exactly ask for much. He has learnt well. Now to get him to not put the heating on every 5 piggin minutes!
    Time to find me again
  • Scattymam has a good point there about not using jar sauces. I always make my own spag bol/lasagne, both pretty similar. I don't use very much meat (50p worth for 3) but I bulk it up with onion, mushrooms (which everyone says they don't like so I cut them really small so they can't tell) garlic, value chopped tomatoes, a bit of tomato puree, some italian herbs and a few gravy granules. Then use value spaghetti or lasagne sheets so costs very little for a hearty healthy meal.

Another thing you could do if you have the time and patience is make things to fill the fridge, like home-made quiche or potato salad, so it's healthier and cheaper than the shop-bought stuff and there's still plenty in there for OH to much on!

    thanks again everyone.

well i've been to the butchers today stocked up on meat for the week for 5.39:eek: we can usually spend 15.00 easy a week on meat. I've put it all in the freezer.

Did my shopping online again and saved a small fortune but I couldnt find a voucher code that worked so ended up paying 6.25 for delivery:eek:

Now can anyone point me in the direction for a recipe for

    Jam tarts
    lemon curd
    scones

we made the biscuits last week and they went down very well.

    My scones

    225g plain flour
    2tsps baking powder
    50g butter or marge
1 egg made up to 150ml with milk
    25g sugar

    Optional:
    100g raisins

Rub butter into flour, add raisins and sugar, mix with milk and egg (reserve about a tbsp for brushing over top), knead lightly then press out to about 1in thick and cut. Brush scones with leftover egg/milk mix.

Bake at 220 for about 10 mins.
