No webpages on laptop

Hello you good people.....

I'm hoping you can help.

I've got a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop which at about midnight lost all web pages. It was working wirelessly via a Linksys router, and initially I just thought the signal was gone / weak.

Nope today still no joy, although the main computer is working fine hardwired into my Motorolla Surfboard Modem, but when I try the same with the laptop, I still get no web pages.

Messenger throws up the message "unable to resolve DNS"

I've flushed the dns servers via ipconfig / dnsflush

I wanted to try a set of "Open DNS Server Addresses" but I'll be darned if I can remember where the location of the thingymajig is to put them into (if you can help me there, I'll try that too along with any other suggestions).

Oh device manager shows up no problems at all with anything, but I'm beat as to what to do next.

PS I'm using windows xp, firefox as the main browser and I've cleared history / cache etc from I.E. too, restarted the modem umpteen times / router too / computer / done' a system restore. All that I can think of basically.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Edit I've found the DNS Servers and added 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 from Open DNS and currently just restarting the laptop and still no joy.

Oh and my son has just said the xbox 360 is not connecting either suggesting a problem with the router itself.

Sameless bump......Can anyone help please???:confused::confused:

The laptop is connecting to the router fine, but it's not giving me a new IP address at all and after phoning my ISP for help yesterday they suggested it was a TCP/IP issue. Help please I really don't know what to do.

Thanks again in advance of any replies.

Sounds like possibly the WLAN has broken or got corrupted. Is the wireless LAN light on, on the router?

On the laptop, can you open a dos prompt and type IPCONFIG, I suspect it will fail.

On the main computer, can you log into the router and see what the settings are for the wireless Lan?

Usually open a browser (ie or firefox) and type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.

He said that the main computer is hard wired into the router (Network cable) so the internet works, and he said when he uses the network cable on the laptop it still dosnt work so that means there nothing wrong with the WLAN card.
    • On the back of your router there should be a little reset button that you can push in with a pen to reset it back to default settings. Make sure the router is powered on and push this button in. YOU WILL LOOSE ALL YOUR WIRELESS SETTINGS AND WIRELESS SECURITY SETTING so please make sure you know how to re enable these again.
    • If that dosnt work login to the router and make sure DHCP is turned on. Then on all the compuiters (includeing the XBOX) has the IP address to be automaticly assigned. You may have IP address conflicts. To make sure that they automaticly get an IP address, Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > right click your wifi connection, Properties > TCP / IP in the lst and then click propertise again > ensure they are on automatic. Repeat this for your other networ connection and do it on all machines.
    Hope thsi helps.

    Switch off all your computers,

Switch the modem OFF for 20-15 minutes then back on again wait until the light says the ADSL is connected, then switch on the computers and re-try.

The delay will ensure that all connections through the system to your ISP are dropped properly, and on restart they will ALL be re-made.

You should let the modem also get the DNS automatically, so suggest you return it to normal settings you had prior to you changing it.

Not sure who open DNS is but your ISP runs its own servers and you should be using theirs, if trying to use a third party DNS then it may still not work as you may be blocked as you are not a direct connection.

Also would NOT suggest you hit the reset button, unless you are tech savvy in resetting it all up again with username, passwords etc for your ISP.

Fully agree. He seems to have knowlege though if he knows what DNS and OpenDNS is. BTW, OpenDNS

Hiya I'm back only just thought and wanted to say a big thank you to you two for taking the time to post help for me to try.

In the end I lost not only the wireless connection but the hardwired one too and no matter what I tried, no joy.

A call to the virgin helpno-one desk in India told me it was my tcp/ip and it needed reinstalled.

Managed to get the connection established, but I kept dropping the webpages and wasn't effected by the zone alarm / microsoft update issue.

Narrowed it down to a problem with the ethernet port on the surboard modem as I managed to connect via usb and get web pages.

Cables were fine as I was able to access the router page via ethernet to the Linksys router.

Switched the modem off for 24 hours and left it, managed to get the connection and web pages, this worked for 24 hours before I decided to brave the wireless. Failled after connecting the router up, but knew that was working ok too. Disconnected modem, and left for 24 hours again and voila - we have connection and web pages on both the hardwired pc and the laptop via wireless which I'm using to type this one.

Once again thank you so much for you help.

PS Can I just say I'm a girlie not a dude
