if a melon bought at tesco was cut and found

to not be ripe -therefore not edible - can we bring this back? thanks in advance.

    I would never consider taking it back - I would imagine it will ripen even though its cut? Leave it out of the fridge for a day and I'm sure it'll be fine.

    as differnt to the ones in france and used to pick them in the markets where they also tell you if it is ready.

    i had one from morrisons once that was ripe, but tasted oddly fishy. I rang them up and they were happy to give me my money back - just said throw it away and bring receipt in. I bet Tesco would be more than happy. The magic words (I had one like this once at Asda and they gave me my money back) are always helpful.!!

    I wouldn't 'cos I'd feel should have checked but supermarkets are very good about exchanges and refunds - you'd probably get another one!

    sorry forgot to add, apparently melons are one of the few fruit that won't continue ripening once cut from the vine as well.

    Thats not true - they ripen, but they don't get sweeter.

    I've often ripened melons at home.

    I ripen them at home all the time because most of the time when you buy them in the supermarket they aren't ready. Usually takes no more than 2 days for them to come good.

    i'm quoting my organic gardening guru and hero Bob Flowerdew (but don't you just want to cut off the pigtail??) I suppose it depends on your definition of ripen - soften or sweeten.

    It's not just melons that would affect - I've often had really, really rubbish fruit from the supermarket - I get oranges so sour I find myself scraping my tongue, peaches 'to ripen' which I try every day and go from rock hard to incredibly mouldy overnight (and I don't mean I sit there and buise them till they go mouldy) and bananas which are victims of physical abuse - covered in bruises the next day!
