I would never consider taking it back - I would imagine it will ripen even though its cut? Leave it out of the fridge for a day and I'm sure it'll be fine.

i had one from morrisons once that was ripe, but tasted oddly fishy. I rang them up and they were happy to give me my money back - just said throw it away and bring receipt in. I bet Tesco would be more than happy. The magic words (I had one like this once at Asda and they gave me my money back) are always helpful.!!

I wouldn't 'cos I'd feel should have checked but supermarkets are very good about exchanges and refunds - you'd probably get another one!

sorry forgot to add, apparently melons are one of the few fruit that won't continue ripening once cut from the vine as well.

Thats not true - they ripen, but they don't get sweeter.

I've often ripened melons at home.

I ripen them at home all the time because most of the time when you buy them in the supermarket they aren't ready. Usually takes no more than 2 days for them to come good.

i'm quoting my organic gardening guru and hero Bob Flowerdew (but don't you just want to cut off the pigtail??) I suppose it depends on your definition of ripen - soften or sweeten.

It's not just melons that would affect - I've often had really, really rubbish fruit from the supermarket - I get oranges so sour I find myself scraping my tongue, peaches 'to ripen' which I try every day and go from rock hard to incredibly mouldy overnight (and I don't mean I sit there and buise them till they go mouldy) and bananas which are victims of physical abuse - covered in bruises the next day!
