I have used xe.com about five or six times over the last three years. I am very happy with their service, and with costs. They are a good deal cheaper than any bank-to-bank transfers that I have found (and I checked out plenty of options).

They earn their profit by charging a margin on the exchange rate. The exchange rates shown on their website are mid-market rates, and no business could possibly exchange money at these rates. In order to see the rates that they offer to customers, you need to register and log in. If you choose to provide and receive money by electronic funds transfer, these are the only fees you pay. (Their exchange rate varies every few seconds, but you see the rate they are offering you and can lock into it when you confirm a transaction.) If you need the money to arrive more quickly, you can pay extra for a wire transfer.

Note that since there are no fixed fees (unless you need a wire transfer) this service is cost-effective for small amounts of money.

Does anyone have an account with XE Trade? I want to send money from US to UK and would like to find out their rates. Because we're Brits in the US they don't accept any of our ID docs without verification so signing up could be a bit of a hassle just to find out what their rates are. If anyone's able to look up USD to GBP and let us know what they currently are with XE.com (and if the rate depends on the amount traded), that'd be most useful so we know if it's worth the hassle to sign up for a one-off transfer or just go via our bank.
    Thanks all!

XE.com has been around for years (Custom's House) and is fantastic. The rates are good and the speed of their transfers is excellent. You do need to fill out an extra form (or something) to go over £6,000/day, though.

I've just used it for to-and-fro US to UK (and vice versa).

Used to use XE.com to transfer my earnings in New Zealand to my UK bank account back in 2009. Thought the fees were fair and the speed of transfer was very good. Probably has got even better over the last few years.

Excellent. Better rates than travelex, hifx, or others i have tried. Had an account for years. Transferred £8k to Sweden yesterday and it was done almost immediately after the uk payment was sent to their bank.

xe.com has a great service. I have used them for many years. Highly recommended.

    Free ACH transfer is great.

However they did lose a cheque one time in the post. But it was cancelled and wired accordingly.

It's a hassle to setup an account and when you finally manage to setup a transfer, they will hold your money for ever and do not give you an update or send it to the recipient. I'm 1 week on the phone asking them to release my money and all they say is "tomorrow"...

Yes I have used xe.com many times. Using Wire transfer takes a couple of days and saves a fortune compared to the exchange rates my bank quote.
