This is usually dealt with by solicitors isn't it.The money changes hands-the time to hand over the keys is decided-midday often.Until the money has been transferred over nothing can happen.
    Was it a private sale?
  • Yes it was a private sale in so much that we did'nt have an estate agent, but we had both used solicitors and everything had been agreed and sorted. The only reason the solicitor was'nt given the keys, on exchange, it was agreed that the next day, the Saturday, was the most convenient to move, the people who had bought ours thought that as well. So while paperwork had already been done, the keys were just left for us to sort out.

A few years early i had move, the people who bought my house were getting married on moving day. I moved out and gave them the keys a few days earlier, (can't expect them to marry in morning, and move in afternoon). I remember at the time, people all said i was making a big mistake, if they had refused to do the final signature and kept the house. But everything went fine, most people are honest.

  • I would always recommend paying a couple of men and a van after our recent moving experiences.

When we moved to London we did hired our own van and took a couple of mates. It was a third floor flat though and even the stronger blokes were knackered half way through. It took ages and we were too exhausted to unpack that night, which meant Sunday was manic as we tried to get everything sorted and ready to start news jobs.

When we left that flat we hired two blokes to do it for us and becuase they were used to all the lifting they had everything packed up in half an hour, whereas we had to take a break after every box! They unloaded it all in about the same time too. It was sooo much relaxed and effcient than trying to do it ourselves.

Yes,but it sounds as though by choosing the Satuday when the solicitors were closed, you caused the issues yourself.
  • Yes, i'm putting my hands up, guilty.
They say you learn by your mistakes. But i'm not sure if it's true, i keep mistaking them.

Another vote for paying others to do the work. There will be twice as much stuff as you think when it is boxed up and it will be four times the weight you imagine. Blokes who do this work day in and day out will take it in their stride and do it in half the time. It will be money well spent!
