Tesco - policy on goods faulty after guarantee

I bought a quite expensive washer dryer from Tesco two years and one month ago, I didn't bother getting the extended guarantee as they are massively overpriced but now it has suddenly broken down completely - the PCB has burnt out and mechanic says it's not worth getting fixed. Well, having spent £400 on it I was very annoyed and although the guarantee was up I phoned to complain, not with very high hopes, but it turns out that they have a policy on this and are sending me out a form to claim a proportion of the original cost back as it didn't last very long. This is good to know so I pass it on to those of you who were as uninformed as me! However for anyone who has been through this claim system, any ideas how much I am likely to get? What should I settle for, as I suspect they might try to fob me off with a token amount?

Seems a bit harsh to put this on the vent board if you are actually praising Tesco for offering something over and above what you expected.

as you have had the use of the item for just over 2 years you would have obatined betterment from use of the product for that eriod of time

i would say around £200 - but let them make an offer and the make a counte offer.

i would not recommend getting washer dryers as they are well known to break down and have a short lease of life

if space permits get seperate units

Possibly right Swan Jon, but I'm not too used to this site and wasn't sure where it fitted - moderators please move if not appropriate. However I am still annoyed that they sold me a product that didn't last more than two years especially as the mechanic reckons this particular model is always breaking down!

Wish I had space for separate units, very small kitchen and in a flat so no drying space either. Thanks for input!

This is not based on anything other than my personal opinion, but I'd say £400 purchase price, expected life of a washer dryer (which are generally less reliable than separate machines) I'd say is ~5 years, so if you've had it for 2 years, then I wouldn't think it's a uniform depreciation, so maybe £100-£150...

But you're lucky Tesco are volunteering to do this, you'd usually have to fight to get partial refunds, so there's not really hard & fast rules to base it on.

Reporting back on this - Tesco sent me a cheque for £205! Surprisingly, they didn't even check on the state of the machine, though I offered to let them come and look at it or get a report from the local mechanic I'd had out. They just took my word for it and needed to see proof of purchase (I couldn't even find the receipt, but I had my original credit card statement showing it). It would encourage me to buy from them again, that's for sure.
