Boiler Problem !!! Please advice (Slight Corrosion on Flue in Loft)

Hi just had this guy from nPower service my gas boiler a Myson Appllo model one.
This I think is the old type boiler as we still have the hot water cylinder for storing hot water.
The guy did some checks and cleaned the boiler and then went up the loft and checked and then he said it does not look good, there is a slight corrosion with the flue and would recommend you to STOP using this boiler and since its an old boiler you might be better off to go for a new combi boiler.... Also he mentioned that the gas meter is not supported properly. (Not sure if this is a serious situation that I need to go for a boiler replacement immediately)
Any advice/tips guys? What is the best thing to do? Early this year had a guy who came to fix a problem with the CH, said a valve was not working and ended up replacing the hot water cylinder itself
.
If you guys think the best thing is to go for a new one, then please suggest which type of boiler and can I trust BT/nPower for a new boiler?? Should I find some local plumber from yellow pages and call them in for a quote as well?
Thanks a lot

Wondering...
Snce my boiler is working without any problems, its only the pipework (flue) I guess that needs to be replaced (not sure if my understanding is correct on this though?).
If I take a cover from British Gas, will I be able to get them to replace it? or in future if my boiler does cough up, will they sort it for me???
Suggestions/Advice please.....0 -
Can someone help please...
Should I be worried that the flue is getting corroded?0 -

Any ideas as to if you take a cover from British Gas or other providers will they cover the replacement expense of the flue in case it needs to be replaced during the cover period?
This guy stuck a danger label sticker on my boiler...mentioning that the flue is corroding but did not advice as to should I turn off the boiler.. he said its purely my choice if I want to turn it off or carry on using it and get it repaired at the earliest....0 -
Particularly with the state of your boiler (but regardless too), I'd advise you get a decent a carbon monoxide detector (i got the one that CORGI sell via their website) and if the alarm goes off turn off the boiler quickly open all windows and get out the house and don't turn it back on again. If you feel tired and lethargic or getting lots of headaches all the time carbon monoxide poisoning could be responsible. Don't take chances with it ...get it sorted.
When we replaced our boiler it was discovered that the flue had been leaking and one of those little carbon monoxide stickers had turned black (we thought it was just nicotine stains as old lady before us smoked in the kitchen!).
As i already said to you in another post, don't get any long barge poles anywhere near british gas! The price they quoted us for a new boiler was extortionate. I'm pretty sure they have a get out clause for old boilers with existing problems so you'd probably be wasting your money if your expecting them to pay for a new boiler.
I'd look into getting some quotes if i were you and find out if it's absolutely necessary to replace the whole boiler or if you could get away with just a new flue. If the flue is corroding though maybe it would indicate the boiler has seen better days too. You don't have to get a combi..you could keep the hot water cylinder and have a standard condensing boiler which is what we went for.
Also as i said before i'd recommend Swale heating if your in their area (you said greater london before so you may be - they certainly cover the bromley area so might be worth enquiring). My parents, sister and my grandparents all used Stevenson Heating (Hayes, Bromley) to install their boilers and come highly recommended. Stevenson are the parent company of Puffin Insulation who installed our cavity wall insulation and again i'd highly recommend.
Oh and incidentally the unsupported gas meter, don't worry too much about that as we had a similar warning notice due to regulations changing. Was ok when we had the boiler installed ..but not a year later when it was serviced!
Hope that helps

andrew-b,
Thanks a lot, very kind of you to go through my post and reply in such detail.
Recently I brought a carbon monoxide detector the one that was sold half price from Lloyds Pharmacy (First Alert), It has not detected any problems, the guy who came to service the boiler used the same to check the loft as well for any leakages.
I will surely give the guys you have mentioned a call and ask them for a quote for either replacing only the flue or if required the boiler as well.
Once again thanks for all the suggestions. :T0 -
your welcome
As always get at least 3 quotes in before you make any decisions and preferably from recommendations rather than out of the phone book.0 -
Andy,
Unfortunately Swale and Stevenson both are as you said Kent based and do not cover the area where I live which is closer to Essex, gave them both a call and found out.
I got conned once by a local guy, so would highly appreciate if some one can give me some good recommendations for Essex (IG7) Area
