  • She may be too young for this, but my granny (now 94) has been having talking books every birthday from us for the last 6 years.

Her sight isn't great, so she can't read newspapers anymore, so we get the talking newspaper association (you can find them on a google search) and they offer a great subscription for the amount of money you are looking at, doing a weekly update of the newspaper stories, then you can choose between 200 odd magazine subscriptions. My granny has the talking newspaper (Daily Mail is her choice) every week, then gets Her Majesty, Good Housekeeping, and five other titles every month, this keeps her busy when she fancies a sit down each day.

Although as I said 80 might be too young for her, but worth getting if she has problems with her sight, or concentration reading.

You may not have enough time for this idea and I really wish I had thought of it myself but how about 80 tiny presents, one for each year of her life..... maybe get together with others who are suprising her ..... this will keep her busy and happy for many many hours

    mega xx

That's a lovely idea, could be used for almost any age.

Why don't you make her a family scrapbook showing all the important things that have happened over her 80 years. I'm going to do this for my mum's 60th in 2 years time.

This isn't particularly special but my mum (82) has one of those wheat bag things that you heat in the microwave for aches and pains, or to warm your feet that she wouldn't be without.
