I bought my Grandpa a similar book about Houghton-le-Spring. He was looking through the pictures with me and there was a class of primary children having their school photo taken. He said it looked familiar then realised he was in the picture as it was his class :D

    LOL! How sweet.

Anyone got any suggestions for something a bit different to get my Gran for her 80th birthday this year?

She's still quite active - lives alone in sheltered accomodation, but still manages to do her shopping, have trips out, goes to OAP's day clubs and she plays bowls.

She normally gets loads of bath stuff, fancy biscuits and books for Christmas/Birthdays so I wanted to stay away from those.

All I can think of so far is making her an embroidered sampler and framing it. Any other ideas appreciated.

I need to buy gift for an aunt for a 'surprise' party on Saturday. Any ideas for something a bit different to flowers/vases please. £40/50 max
  • Belly Button Brush gets my vote! If she's anything like my nana, she'll love it.

my nan really loved the framed photo we got for her from the archives of the local paper, it was from a street party for something to do with the queen, about 50 years ago.

What about a voucher for a luxury pedicure or manicure.. or some other treatment that she may find difficult to do for herself?

Find out if a birthday cake has been organised. Asda will put a photograph, which you provide, on to a cake. It only takes about 20 minutes, costs less than £10 and is really impressive.

We did this very recently for my parents' Diamond Wedding anniversary. We had a picture of them on their wedding day placed on the cake. They loved the cake so much, it was practically stale before we could get them to cut it.

You may not have enough time for this idea and I really wish I had thought of it myself but how about 80 tiny presents, one for each year of her life..... maybe get together with others who are suprising her ..... this will keep her busy and happy for many many hours

We bought my Nan a bird house for her garden, then fixed a bronze house number '80' on to the front - she was thrilled to bits! You could always pad if out with a bird feeder, bird bath, garden plants etc. That's if she has a garden!

How about a newspaper from the day she was born?
