dishwashers & water meters

My last dw broke a few weeks ago & I've tried to go without but I miss it for various reasons - I'm sure I read somewhere that its more economical to use a dw than to handwash (there are 4 of us, & 1dog)

1. does anyone know if its more economical as we are on water meter?

2. do dishwashers have efficiency ratings like fridges & washing machines (my last dw was nearly 12 years old & I can't remember if they had them then )?

3. can anyone recommend a dw?

many thanx

Dishwashers do come with ratings - wash performance, energy efficiency and dry performance - so you want a treble A-rated washer for the most economical.
  • thanx for the above

I just thought of another question - are there any service engineers out there who fix these things who can steer me away from any brands that are not worth the money

a washing machine repair man told me once when I asked his advice on a new model to go for the simplest machine possible as the computer boards are the dearest element to repair - he said to go for a Zanussi basic, I took his advice & so far its lasted double the time that my Hotpoint did - that didn't make 3 years

Yes they use very little water I have a A rated Beko

They use far less water than from using hot water in the tap as my boiler takes ages to get right temperature

I've got a Bosch (can't remember the model number but not the bottom end one) which does a load on 10 litres of water (cold inlet only) in Eco mode (which I use most of the time). If you consider that one washing up bowl is probably about 10 litres, plus you waste water runnning it down the sink to get hot water first before filling the bowl, and a dishwasher will do more than one meal worth, its fairly easy to see that the water savings are there if you are sensible.

The general opinion currently seems to be that Bosch or Miele are the most reliable makes but you will pay a bit more to get them (certainly with the Miele which are a lot more expensive).

'Which' magazine gave this as their best buy
'Bosch SKT5102 Classixx' (about £250) Good at cleaning and economical/water efficient. Negative side. No timer and noisy

They also gave this 'Bosch SGS45C02GB'(£295) and 'Bosch SGS45C02GB' (£245) both slightly better on cleaning but not as economical.
The other contenders were the £450 - £600 mark and mostly Miele

  • I'll kelkoo a couple of the Bosch ones - thanx very much everyone
  • it comes down to a Zanussi ZDF231 - £210.87 A rated 18 litres water 51db 1 yr guarantee

    or Bosch SG543T72UK - £228.95 A rated 17 litres water 54 db 2 yr guarantee

any thoughts - I'm inclined to go for the Bosch even though its dearer & slightly nosier just for the extra year guarantee

also by going thru topcashback I should get 4% back - which is about a tenner!

I had Bosch diswasher. Due to the space in the kitchen it is a slimline, which obvioulsy doesn't wash as much stuff at the same time, but it is fantastic. It is quiet, economical and I just love it. It is Bosch Exxell and it is really good.

The problem I have now is that we sold the hosue and are in the rented now, where we can't put dishwasher (there is not even a space for the rubish bin in the kitchen!!!!!).

Because we keep moving house, I've encountered a few dishwashers. My own is a Smeg which is fine, a little temperamental, but the two Bosch Clasixx ones I've lived with have been flawless, I never had to redo a wash. :)
