We have a 3-door car, and only my DF drives, so it is likely that when baby is in the car we both will be. I plan to ride in the back with the baby so that ought to make it easier to get him in and out. We also bought a car seat which doesn't go into any travel system so we wouldn't be tempted to leave him in it for too long, and leave the seat in the car when we are not using it.
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right

I know of several parents who have to travel in the back of their cars even when their kids are much older - 2/3 as they're so used to having a parent beside them they scream and create when they don't. It may be better to not do it for too long at the start?

Thanks all; that's put my mind at rest some.

I don't very often carry passengers, so it's likely to just be me and baby in the car. I think I'll wait until after xmas (so long away! :() then go to the big out-of-town Mothercare and see what fits in the car and have a go to see how hard it is to get the seat in the back.

In the meantime, will call the local Ford dealer and find out the cost to switch the airbag off (can't find a switch anywhere to do it myself!).

When I made enquiries about having an air bag de-activated in a Ford I was told no by 2 different main dealers, as it would have meant de-activating the driver's side too, unless they removed the whole unit.
Better to put the baby in the back - statistically they are safer there.

We have a new style fiesta Ghia and we can turn off the airbag ourselves. In our glovebox there is place that you put the car key in and turn and this disables it, check your handbook. Saying that we are expecting our first child in 5 weeks and have decided to carry baby in the front if we were going on a long journey and only one of us was going otherwise he's going to be in the back.

    Hi,

I have got a Graco travel system and found a base on ebay which cost £8 for a catalogue return one (never used) it is brilliant, easy to fit and once it is in there is not messing about with seatbelts just clip the car seat in and away you go. I find it makes the cas seat alot more stable too as for some reason I seem to be able to get the belt alot tighter.

    Hope this helps

Is it bad to leave baby in carseat for longer than the journey time then?
In the first few months both my 2 used to nod off in the car and it was handy being able to carry them from car to house without waking them!

they shouldnt be in the upright position for more than 2hrs! - so basically should only be used for short journeys, and not the all day, easy 'car-shopping-car-sleep at home' that the travel systems purport themselves to be

  • I Had a honda civic sport 3 door when DS was born, it was so low but what we did was have baby in the front with airbag disabled until he came out of the first baby car seat, then we changed to the bigger seat that stays in the car and put him into the back. That worked well for us. Saying that, we then bought a new 5 door golf when DS2 was due because it was getting too difficult. My airbag disable button is also in the glovebox so def check that.
