"What if according to the universities records she was still living in halls all year and so all notices of overdue money owed where sent to the halls and not home, seen as halls are her term time residence. This is what happened at my halls of residence, it happened to me (addmittedly only beuase I chnaged debit card numbers and they tried to chage a debit card that had expired). ".... exactly...they didn't notify the accomodation services....

semester....sorry...I was hinting at the periods when rent was due...normally in 3 parts (terms)...which makes me wonder.... "Out of blue was sent letter asking for full terms money (1212)....which terms rent was this?

1st term ...up to december....not paid...and billed when she left in December?...in which case...rent due
2nd term....up to end march...she left in December..didn't hand key in til march... same as above...rent due
3rd term....April til end of year...she was long gone by then....Uni & Accomodation services have home address, contracts were signed...so something doesn't quite add up and really sounds like..."I'm not there, so I don't care if they do bill me"...really this was the time to query contract/bills/invoices....and this is all over a year ago!

still think for advice, more info is required as I've said before, based on what has been written by the OP...it wasn't done right...they owe the money...

the forum is there for advice...based on what info they (OP) have given, you can only base an answer on how the "other " party will react...and thats based on T & Cs (factual) that you no doubt signed yourself when you went into halls.
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

There were 3 semesters at unis this year because of the early Easter.

Universities work on a two semester system and a 3 term system. September to Christmas is semester and term 1. January to easter is term 2 and easter till summer is term 3. January through till summer is semester 2.

Lol just my daft uni then that had 3 lol! It says semester 3 in massive capitals in my diary above the first day back after Easter. I presume if they had thought about it properly though, it should have been a trimester?

I have a friend though who left in about February, and had only paid the first installment. He still hasn't been asked for it now, and has spend the money that was supposed to pay for it. Uh oh! Guess it depends on how strict / organised the uni is.
