Hi,
I'm tired of lugging my Inspiron 1501 around so would like to find a sub 2.5kg laptop. Any of you great experts out there with a recommendation for me? Don't want a sub notebook ie must have DVD drive.
Many thanks!!

Check out the Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S. My wife has just got one and it's very nice and I think it comes in under 2kg.0

You don't mention a budget, but the Apple MacBook weighs in at 2.25kg, and it's a great little machine.0

Dell D630 is a good laptop (have one at work) and weighs in at around 2kg. We also have HP 6510b laptops which are also good. Both have built in wireless, DVD drives, bluetooth. All the usual sort of stuff really, but for me I would go with Dell as HP suppport is useless.0

I have a Dell XPS M1330
some say the XPS range is overpriced but I certainly find mine to be of decent build quality and a great trade off between big laptop and sub notebook
weighs about 2kg with the standard 4 cell battery0 -
*Edited* Just seen you want a drive in it...discard what's below :S*
Check out the Wikipedia entry for the EEE PC.
The cheapest models can be found http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/804069/?camp_id=ppc_google_long_tail_laptops_asus_eepc_laptop for less than £200. (although I'd get the 4GB or 8GB model, not the 2GB model.
They weight 1KG or less depending on the model and are only 7 inches across. They are very light and v. small, you can't get a UMPC for anywhere near the same price. Most of the models sell for between £180 and £300The EEE PCs are tried and tested and there's a strong community around them too. It's best to ge tthem with Linux rather than XP as then you get a higher spec and you can always load XP later on, although Linux and better (opinion) is faster and there are many free applications for it.
On the downside, the storage capacity can be low but for the 901 and 1000, it's 20GB and 80GB respectively.
If I was going to get one I'd get the new 901 as these have a large HDD and battery life and they're about £280 http://www.lambda-tek.com/componentshop/index.pl?origin=gbase8.2&prodID=1584204
The 1000 are bigger and heavier but with a bigger HDD and bigger screen and a couple of extra features (like multi touch touchpad).
EEE PC are made by ASUS (well respected motherboard and laptop company) They make the MacBooks for Apple (Apple don't make them themselves) and they look quite macbook-esque.
***IMO the EEE PC should really be in the cheapest laptop aricle. They might not have as big HDDs as some others but they are very small for people who need smaller laptops***0 -
Agree with the comments about the ASUS eee PC.
If someone else is footing the bill consider a X-series Thinkpad, they are compact and have a reputation for being reliable (I have a 7-8 year old X20 and it is working perfectly)."One thing that is different, and has changed here, is the self-absorption, not just greed. Everybody is in a hurry now and there is a 'the rules don't apply to me' sort of thing." - Bill Bryson0 -
Thanks for all of your helpful advice, you have given me a lot to research further.:T0
