im about to rent a flat and will need insurance. i understand that i will need to insure my contents against the usual theft/fire etc. However i think i also need to cover the landlord's property against any damage i may cause to it.
does anyone know a good cheap company to have a look at?

Any standard tenant's insurance will cover damage to the LL's property ... but watch the small print!
Google or use a decent insurance search engine. Or wait for more specific suggestionsWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

There are plenty of companies that do tenant's insurance - in fact all you are really looking for is contents insurance. Start with the comparison websites like Confused and Money Supermarket, and they will ask you if you are a homeowner or a tenant, and come up with lots of quotes.
Spend at least an hour getting as many quotes as you can. I did this recently when I moved house - agree with the previous poster that Endsleigh is generally quite cheap. I found the high street banks to be shocking (I think Barclays quoted £300!!!).
I would recommend Birmingham Midshires who I went with. One of the cheapest quotes I found (around £100 overall), I could pay in monthly installments and there was no interest charged for paying it monthly, which a lot of them seem to do.0
