Russian spam

About mid-afternoon, I received a batch of around 100 emails seemingly from various servers in Russia. They were all returned undeliverable emails that the server seemed to feel had come from me. Was this SPAM or has my computer been taken over by a spammer? The latter is highly unlikely, since I run a Suse Linux operating system, using Evolution as my preferred mail service. I do access my mail from other computer equipped with Windows/Outlook Express which are protected by AVG. I don't have a virus system protecting the Linux computer, since I have never considered it necessary. Have I been infiltrated? As soon as the email returns started, they stopped again. Is this a game?

Given that you run quite a secure environment (compared to Windows) it's more likely that someone who you know (i.e. someone with your email address in their contacts list) has had their PC "owned".

It wouldn't harm to run chkrootkit though:

And maybe install ClamAV, though I must confess I tried and failed to get that to work under Ubuntu Edgy, and haven't bothered to try again since...
