I'm now resisting the temptation to buy a baking stone - I have some really nice non-stick frying pans, will they do the job properly?
My Dad's side of the family is Welsh, I always remember my aunt's lovely Welsh cakes - the highlight of our visits to them! I've just finished a pack of M&S ones today too....looks like I'll be busy tomorrow!
    :j Almost 2 stones gone! :j

I've made them in a heavy bottom frying pan but they are not as good as made on a bakestone. Trouble is it's so hard to buy a bakestone. If you know some who works in the steel works they may make one for you, else it's second hand searching.

  • Is a bakestone like a pizza stone?? Sorry to butt in on a wales thread :) but I saw this come up on the front page and I've always fancied trying welsh cakes (when I was in Wales every time I tried to buy one the bakeries were sold out! so I figured they were nice)

My bakestone is an old heavy cast iron one. Looks like thisbakestone_with_cakes_280.jpg . Mine isn't black as it's been shot blasted to clean it up before I was given it (my mother had 2 black ones and I think she said that it goes black with use). It weighs a ton and has to be put outside to cool down after use as it retains heat for a very long time.

  • Is a bakestone the same as a girdle? That's what I've always called mine.

  • Every day when I wake up I thank the Lord I'm WELSH. .
  • I think we call these griddles - I know my gran used to make griddle sodas on one anyway...I guess this is the 'girdle' thing too :)
  • ive made mine on the george foreman before, as we have a ceramic hob which is unsuitable for bakestones. the crinkle cut effect is a little unusual but they still taste as good :D
