Thanks for that, as I said I can't get into a discussion on planning as I know as much about planning as I do about brain surgery! I can only go on the advice I was given at the time, if anyone else is considering erecting a similar system then the best bet is for them to check with their local planning office.

I've removed the name of the company who manufacturer the kits from my original post. I chose to put the system up on my property so if anyone has broken any regulations then it is me and not the company concerned. If anyone does want their details (after seeking planning advice ;)) then I'll happily PM them, they couldn't have been more helpful when I was putting mine up.
  • I have a cat proof garden installed by a company called Katzecure, 2 of my neighbours have had it installed as well. Katzecure can install it for you or you can just buy the parts and install yourself. It doesn't need planning permission as it only just shows over the top of the fence (our fences are 6 foot high). It not only stops your cats getting out but also stops other cats getting in.

I am amazed at how things have developed over the years. Not all cats are road aware & I personally lost several cats to traffic when I lived in a house with a garden.

I know my cousin has Freedom Fence installed in her garden so her cats can't get out, she says it is good,

see extract from website below: (I just googled Freedom Fence)

    Freedom For Your Pets.

Freedom Fence™ allows your pets to enjoy the full run of your garden and grounds all day, whether you are with them or not and thus hugely improve the quality of their lives. The Freedom Fence pet containment system is a radio fence and not an electric fencing system.
    Freedom from anxiety.

Ownership of pets can be a source of worry as well as joy. If you are not worried about having been away for too long without having let them out for a run, you are worried about them bothering the neighbours, straying and getting lost, or being involved in an accident. You can eliminate all these sources of stress, very simply, by installing a Freedom Fence™.
    Freedom from nuisance.

We all try to keep on good terms with our neighbours but our pets can sometimes make this rather difficult. If you have this problem, harmony can easily - and permanently - be restored by installing a Freedom Fence™.
Freedom from stray pets on the roads.

Modern roads are dangerous enough without the additional hazard of stray pets, and the nightmare scenario is that your pet could cause an accident in which someone could be killed.
Responsible pet ownership now means that we have to keep our pets secure - and the best way to achieve this is to install a Freedom Fence™.

I managed to fence my last garden so my persians remained in the garden. No escape attempts - other than from dp's moggy who was an alley cat and a rescue - but even that cat met his match with the fence! The cats were all over 18 yrs when they died - and all loved the garden. We did it ourselves and it looked a lot like the pictures spookeylukey posted. We used steel brackets and chicken wire. The difference is - that at the suggestion of our neighbour - we folded a lip over and down so that if the cat climbed - and hung - on the wire he wouldn't go over the lip. Let me try and draw it so this makes sense

The bit that folds over at the top meant that even when Mischief hung on the slope he couldn't actually let go and climb over and out. It worked brillantly! I'd post a pic but we have since moved.

We simply fitted this above our 5 foot wooden garden fence. The peace of mind it gave was wonderful - but I do echo earlier comment. You can't use high shrubs near it.
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!
  • We have two young cats, 15 months old now, and I'm still always worried about them being out and when they leave the garden. We moved house a month ago, so they've only been out a few times alone and even then we kept going out and watching them! I guess you just have to let go and at the end of the day, they'll always come back to a warm house with food and cuddles!

Freedom Fences - this is taken from their own website - '
If he ignores the warning - as he may just a few times at the beginning - he receives a correction similar to the static electricity sometimes experienced from a car door or lift button.' - This is just sales speak for 'this fence will give your pet an electric shock should they acidentally enter the out of bounds area, for example when being chased, falling off a structure etc.' These are nasty things and not even an effective solution a lot of the time - dogs and cats can escape from an enclosure 'guarded' by these things, and then be too scared to re enter as they don't recognise the out of bounds areas from the other side, as they've never been trained to respect them from the 'wrong' side - I've heard of many dogs who get out and then can't get back in again, some have then been killed on roads.

If it's not a device you would use on your child to prevent them doing something. why use it on your pet?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • Felisafe is a new company that provides kits that attach on the top of existing fences and walls. They also make custom brackets if you have an awkward area to deal with. Their web address is www felisafe.co.uk
