Yes it can be used to process into biodiesel.
If you can get the used oil for free the cost of electric and chemicals to process it into biodiesel will be approx 15p a litre. Saving over a pound a litre at the pumps.
I would not recommend using it unless you process it first.

My OH runs his Discovery on homemade biodiesel with no problems.
(he also makes the processors which are selling like hotcakes)

You need to pay duty on the home made biodiesel though.

Actually you are allowed to make 2500 litres before you have to pay duty.(Thats for personal use only)
That would run some cars for a full year if they were low mileage users

Also, can the government really guage how much fuel you make?

Now if you are making biofuel to sell then you are liable for duty on all of it.
Not quite sure how much that is but somewhere round the 40p a litre mark.

You can use 2500 litres of svo without paying duty, if you're using used vegetable oil you have to pay duty on it all.

Sorry but the 2500 litres allowance applies to biodiesel and not to the vegetable oil. No government would suggest using SVO in a motor.

I dont know the actual figures but over 20 million litres of used vegetable oil is dumped every month

Seems abit absurd that a government would encourage (through taxation rules) the use of svo rather than recycling wvo which would have been dumped/disposed anyway with the potential user consumin fossil diesel instead?!

Provide more details of your car and you might get a more specific response:confused:

It does apply to veg oil i'm afraid, once it goes into your tank its classed as a biofuel and legal up to the 2500ltr limit.

You can use wvo if you have registered with HMRC and have done tests to show the sulphur content is less than 0.005%, if using svo you don't need to test it because it doesn't contain the same impurities.

Some of our drivers used to mix used chip oil with diesel in the winter.. they reckoned it helped stopp it freezing.. I know they only added a little bit, but it didn't seem to affect the running.. not sure about modern diesels though, and I wouldn't want to risk running on just used chip oil...
