I have a usb dvd drive and i thought that i would like to have a hard drive instead. Is it a simple as changine one ide machine for the other.

Assuming you're running Windows XP or Vista it is as simple as plugging the new USB device into the USB socket. If you have more than one USB port, you can run more than one external USB device simultaneously.
When you introduce the new external hard drive for the first time it will 'talk' to Windows, and a little message saying 'New hardware detected' will pop up. Just leave it for a few seconds and it should then say something like 'New hardware installed' and a drive letter will have been automatically assigned.
You just need then to format the new drive before you can use it.
