Decent cheapish/medium hotel in NEW YORK

We're after a hotel for 5 nights in early September in NEW YORK. Preferably not too expensive but comfortable and CENTRAL to the main sights. Any ideas, please?

You might want to look at my posting for Priceline
    http://forum.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Travel;action=display;num=1087971352

I have looked at the sucessful bids coming back for New York in September and they are:-

    Sunday, September 12 - Monday, September 13, 2004

    Courtyard By Marriott Midtown East
    866 Third Avenue
    New York, New York 10022

    Your Offer Price: $65.00
    Number of Rooms: 1
    Number of Nights: 1
    Subtotal: $65.00
    Taxes and Service Fees: $15.77
    Total Charges: $80.77

At todays rate thats about £43 a night not bad, however if you decide to bid start at £35 for a 4* if no joy then £40 for a 3* and then go down to a 2.5* again at £40, you may be lucky

Take a look at http://p071.ezboard.com/fpricelineandexpediabiddingnewyorkcitynonewjersey.showMessage?topicID=1974.topic this shows all the hotels for NY,

any problems or question PM me

I agree with Aircub that Priceline is the way to go to get a reasonable and cheap hotel in New york.

The best web-site to ask questions\research how to bid is http://www.betterbidding.com/

The moderator, Thereuare, actually lives in Hoboken NJ, about 5 miles from New york.

He is very good at guiding PL newbies.

The best bargain to be found though is across the Hudson at the 3* New Jersey City Hyatt.

    http://www.betterbidding.com/index.php?act=ST&f=119&t=5201&

This regularly comes up aty $37.00 which is about £30.00 per night when taxes etc are added.

The view from the hotel, and if you're lucky your room is FANTASTIC.

The PATH train stops next to the hotel and the time into the city is about 20 mins. You can also get a ferry that takes you to the Financial district.

Thanks for this advice. I was really hoping to make a more traditional booking. Has anyone stayed at a reasonable hotel recently, please?

Whilst I agree PL is not for every-one I think you are missing a great chance to get
    a reasonable hotel
    at a reasonable price.

For better answers it may be worth looking at these sites.

The Thorn tree can give some budget answers. This link has what looks like a useful list

This is not citicism but I find it strange that you are on a Money Savings site yet
I was really hoping to make a more traditional booking.
which in my book of travel is NOT the way to save money.

If you need to ask more, feel free.

I can appreciate your point but I am prepared to pay a little more to find out more details about a hotel before I book (e.g. access/closeness to transport/lifts, etc). I can still hope to get leads to good value "tried and tested" hotels from other readers. Thanks for your advice anyway - I am sure other readers will find your information useful to them.

    Hi there,

Not sure if it will be your taste, but we stayed at the gershwin hotel on East 27th street, it was quite convenient for all the usual sightseeing and fairly reasonably priced.

Wherever you stay, have a fabulous time, I'm soooo jealous! ;)

I went to New York in December 2002 and got my hotel through Priceline. Ended up at the Marriott World Financial Center, right in the heart of the financial district. It was a weekend so we got the room really cheap (no business types about!) and it was superb. 10-15 min walk to Battery Park and the ferry to Liberty Island and there was a subway station right next to it so we could get anywhere else really easily.

Sorry, I can't remember the exact price we paid but have a look at https://www.cleverbidding.co.uk for some bidding tips.  ;)

    Hi Wade

We were in New York in March and stayed at the Hilton Times Square - at just over £100 per night it is a little more than we have usually paid (But we took oour mums so had to be careful!!)

The hotel is in a fantastic location, the rooms are great, the staff really helpful and friendly also.

If you are looking for something a bit cheaper the "New Yorker" comes in at about £75 per night - this is in need of refurbishment and certainly is not the best hotel i have ever stayed in (but also not the worst). The rooms are basic, and quite cramped - but have a bed, bathroom and TV so all you need if you are going to be busy and out in the Big Apple

Have also stayed at the Comfort Inn ( ) again quite basic but in a really central location also.

Some other tips if you are interested Village 38 - a delhi on 575 8th Avenue is really good if you want to pick up some cheap and easy food. Great for breakfasts, sndwiches , pick your own salads etc

The Corner Bistro (sorry cannot find the address at the moment) is a real authentic bar , good for burgers etc (toilets not so pleasant though!!!) ???

If you are going to go shopping in Macy's then make sure youpick up a NYC Offical City Guide (if they dont have them in your hotel they have them in the lobby of the New Yorker) as there is always an offer on for if you spend $50 or more you get a freebie

Most places can be accessed by walking - New York is not always as big as you think if you plan well. Although you must experience a yellow cab if you do need to take transport then the underground is safe (well we always have been) and cheap

Hope this helps Wade and enjoy your time - it really is a fantastic place to be
    ;D
