Hmm it depends on what you want, if you just want a simple MP3 player that does nothing other than play songs and your not bothered about having thousands of them on it at once go down to Argos\Maplin and get a cheap MP3 player and don.t bother with the shuffle.

If you want something that will hold more songs play viseo and have the "cool" factor the get an Ipod Nano.

If you are going to spend £130 or so on an mp3 player (which is how much a Nano is), then I would think about getting an iPod Classic. They're currently £140 for the black version on Amazon.

As for the question of are they worth the money, then I would have to say yes. I always swore never to get an iPod (purely because I think Apple are turning into Microsoft and trying to take over the world). However, I would be lost without it. Ideally I would have preferred a product from Creative but they are just too expensive.

I think ipods are without a doubt the best mp3 players out there (as well as the best looking). Imo they ARE worth the money. I wouldn't buy the shuffle as it's too small and has no screen or any reference to which song number you're on or anything. The nano is still small and tidy but has a cracking screen on it.

Isn't strictly true. I haven't looked around for the cheapest deal but amazon are selling the 4mb silver nano (the exact model I have) for £89 with free delivery.

Go for it - You won't regret getting an ipod.

thanks everyone, I think I will get the Ipod nano as there is the option of finding the songs u want on the screen, how can u watch tv or videos on there? Is there also any way of getting on itunes for free? Do they offer any special promotions if i were to buy it from an apple shop? thanks again x

You generally have to pay for TV shows from iTunes, though they do sometimes have special promotions on. The first episode of the latest series of Peep Show was available free from iTunes for instance.

If you don't fancy paying, you could get a TV card for you computer and record the ones you want and then convert them for the iPod. Time consuming, but worth it if you're going on a long trip. You can also download videos from Google video and YouTube. You can often find whole shows on there.
  • I have had all three in the past - full sized iPod, ipod nano and ipod shuffle. The latest generation iPod nano is my favourite of all three. The full sized iPod is great but bulky (in comparison with the nano) and I find that being 'limited' to 8gb a good thing - I only put on albums I actually like/want to listen to rather than just all the crap I have in my itunes library.

The shuffle is great for what it is just because of its size, capacity and price. But if you're used to having a screen it can be frustrating finding the song you want from a selection of 100.

I would go for the Nano.

Shuffle does not have as big a memory so the same songs come around again quite fast.

If you want a display - which amoungst other things allows you to sort through your music, search or browse for a track / artist etc, choose what plays next, flick through your music collection, adjust many settings, play games, etc, plus have much more room to store music, then go for the Nano.

If you want a simple player, no display, no frills, but is smaller (in capacity and size) and you are happy organise playlists on the computer before uploading to the device, then choose the Shuffle.

We have both in our family, both are excellent, the Nano is mine and I love it - highly recommended.
  • I have an 8gb nano, and I think the extra money is worth being able to see videos (good for podcasts) and as a mobile picture viewer.
