dial up error 678

hi there

my friend is on dial-up , and has recently started getting this error message

Error 678 "The remote computer did not respond"

what can be causing this , and how can it be corrected, many thanks :)

    Who is the ISP? If "The remote computer did not respond" check their status on their website or try to connect from your PC.

    OK or normal? If it is them, and going by the error, you were not able to connect to their modem or if you did, then none of their gateways picked you up.

    Fix == new isp

    1. Restart your computer and wait until all applications have completely loaded before trying to reconnect.

In the box which appears type the word command in order to open the command prompt and then click OK. In the black command prompt window, type netsh interface ip reset log.txt and click on Enter on your keyboard. Then type exit into the command prompt and then click on Enter on your keyboard. Now restart your computer and reconnect to the Internet.

    3. Recreate the Dial Up Connection as described

    @alanwjones, those instructions are not for the dial up service which the op is requesting and whilst contain some useful info, would take some above basic computer knowledge to transpose to be appropriate

    the details provided are no where near enough to diagnose what's gone wrong
    many questions need to be asked first
    1. has the machine been moved recently and are all the cables ok and plugged in to the proper places
    2.has the line been ok recently?, no crackling etc been noticed?
    3. has the op tried to set up a new dial up connection and checked all details such as correct phone number etc?
    I'm sure many other ideas will come up but start there and post back
