Outlook Express 6 - Spell Check

Despite the fact that I have looked on the Microsoft Website for an answer to this problem, I find that as yet I cannot find an answer.

New computer - Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 2 Version 2002.

Outlook Express 6 as default e-mail.

However, when I try to put a spell check on what I have typed it is coming up with "an error occurred while the spelling was being checked".

Any ideas on how to rectify this would be sooooooo good ... please!!?

Outlook express has no built-in spellchecker, it relies on having an Office package ( at least Word) installed. I think you can use stand-alone spellcheckers though e.g. ABC Spell found at http://www.shareit.com/product.html?cart=1&productid=192563&cookies=1&affiliateid=200010620
  • Loubeylou,
If you are running WinXP and have Word installed then Spell Checker
still does not work. You need to obtain the free file from
    http://www.tech-pro.net/howto_010.html
    There's an explanation here.
Use 'method 2'...it's easier and it works.

I meant to add that an excellent alternative to Outlook Express is Thunderbird, it does all that OE does and more....and free.

Many thanks to those who have responded. I am seriously thinking of downloading Thunderbird (as I have now discovered problems with the lack of working spellcheck in Outlook Express).

I have Windows XP Home Edition including Service Pack 2 version 2002. I have also downloaded my old version ('97 I think) of Word/Access/Excel if this makes any difference.

    However, four points:

    1. Has anyone had any experiences - good or bad - with Thunderbird?

    2. Do I download Thunderbird Setup 1.0.7 or Thunderbird 1.5 Beta 2 - just don't want to do the wrong thing, and not sure exactly what the difference is.

    3. Will Thunderbird ask me during the setup whether I wish it to be my default e-mailing service? (I made a terrible mess of things switching my e-mail from my ISP to Outlook Express.)

    4. Also, and this will seem like an incredibly silly question to ask, I am never sure whether to "run" or "save" when downloading these things.

    Advice please.

Create a folder somewhere like My Documents and name it something like D.Loaded Progs
Then when D/Ling choose Save and when the window pops up, browse to your new folder and save it there.
You can then install it at your leisure and you have a copy to fall back on if needed.

Thunderbird 1.07 is the one to get. I've never had any problems and I've used thunderbird virtually since it first appeared.
As djohn advised, make a folder and 'save' anything you wish to download to that folder. You get the opportunity to browse to it when you begin your download.
You should be able to import all yur present email settings without any fuss into Thunderbird.
You won't regret it, Thunderbird is stress free, it just works properly.

    Anyone else?
  • I'm thinking of moving over to Thunderbird from MO.

Is there a function to test account settings in Thunderbird like MO does?
  • Also. Is it possible for Thunderbird to be password protected when opening it up?- like Oe, if so could someone tell me where the option is.

    TIA
