Can I record Sky without a Sky+ box?

Basically, I won't be able to get Sky+ due to having a shared satelite or whatever it is in a block of flats.
So, do I have any alternatives like a DVD recorder/harddrive etc.
Can it work the same as Sky+, watching 1 programme and recording another?
Or setting a timer to record when I'm not in etc?

Hi mate..
It's a shame that so many developers and councils do not consider modern technology when installing these kind of communal systems.
You could have Sky+ but would only be able to record the channel you're watching... a bit pointless..
You could as well have an old video recorder or DVD recorder or indeed one of those DVD/Hard Drive recorders and still record stuff from your Sky box.
I'm afraid though that you will be unable to record one channel whilst watching another, your Sky box can only see one channel at a time.
The other hassle is setting up timers on your recorder in the 1st place.. a real pain in the wotsit and a degree in physics to work out how to do.
Do you subscribe to all the main Sky channels?
If you get a good terrestrial TV signal you may consider a Freeview PVR (a freeview box with a hard drive built in) This will allow you to record one channel whilst watching another, but of course you don't get the likes of Sky Sports and movies etc..
Other options are available, if you need any advice please feel free to ask.
I've worked in the Satellite industry for 12 years and have just about learnt a thing or 2;)

If you are talking freeview there are quite a few options, humax 9000 series pvrs etc.
There is also the option of converting a pc to do this job using a tv card(either satellite or freeview), usually referred to as a htpc or media centre PC
this is my chosen method and the final choice of system I have put together gives me so much more.. not the easiest option and cost will be dependant on what you want you have to pay a fair bit to get all the bells and whistlesclick here to achieve nothing!0
